Revealers Blog Questions for the Week of 11/6-11/13

PREDICTING:
1)    In the chapter “Bird Boy,” Russ describes Big Chris as, “…just kind of loyal and there. At least, until this happened, he was there. After what happened that day, Big Chris never acted quite the same” (p. 55). Why do you think Chris helped Elliot and Russ during the bridge incident, and how do you think the foreshadowing and the bridge event are going to continue to change Big Chris as a character in the novel? Explain.

2)    THINKING BEYOND THE TEXT:
In class, you already discussed whether or not you thought violence is ever acceptable. Now, write your own individual answer to that question, relating it to Elliot’s violence towards the Jock Rots, and the bridge incident. Please be detailed and thoughtful in your explanation.

3)    INFERENCE/READING BETWEEN THE LINES:
In the middle of page 63, Russ’s mom suggests that Elliot is lucky—even after leaving the hospital after he “accidentally” has been dropped off of a bridge by the Jock Rots. Russ’s mom says, “He has his family. And his mom’s right—now he has you two.” Russ doesn’t understand her, and thinks to himself, “Didn’t they understand what a disaster this was? Hadn’t we just come from a hospital? Hello?” Explain what Russ’s mom is thinking here. Do you agree or disagree with her. Please be thoughtful and detailed in your answer.

4)    THINKING BEYOND THE TEXT:
On pp. 67-68 in the novel, Russ’s mom reacts to Elliot’s bridge incident, and Catalina’s bullying, by saying: “Girls at this age can be really vicious, and so vulnerable. I almost think it’s more serious business than you boys with your physical stuff.” Explain what she means. Do you agree or disagree with her? Explain.

  1. Chris help Elliot because he does not want to get in trouble. He rushes down to the rocks and calls for help. I think Chris will change because he does not want to be in that type of situation again and does not want to get in trouble.

"Chris grabbed my arm. Come on! We ran the other way the, the bridge shaking beneath us. We scrambled down the steep riverbank, and started hopping across the rocks."

Before Chris was ganging up on Elliot before Elliot fell of the bridge. After the incident, Big Chris helped Elliot and even went contacting his parents and other people to help him. Chris won't want this to happen again.

  2. 1.I think Big Chris was affected by what Elliot said. Two of the Jock Rots held up Elliot while Burke yelled at him. Elliot said,"You suck,Brown! You all suck! Your ganging up on cowards(only text that was not bad), you know that?" From this quote I can infer that Big Chris never thought about what they were doing.

  3. 2. I think Elliot did not do the right thing. He went a little too far because he knew that the jock rots would use violence back. It would have been better if he used his sock after they did something to him because it was partially Elliot's fault that he was thrown off the bridge because he started the fight.

"I'm sick of what people do okay? I'm sick of it! Someone has to pay! Someone!" Pg. 54 Ch. " The Weird Girl"

Elliot is sick of being bullied so he decides to strike back. He uses violence and he thinks the Jock Rots will stop if he uses the sock. But Elliot was wrong. That proves violence is situational.

  4. Q)2
I think violence is situational. That means it can be only be used in certain circumstances. For example, I think that violence is acceptable when someone is trying to harm you. Another example is whenElliot is bullied by a group called the Jock Rots, and I think he has the rights to defend himself.
In the book, it says," The Jock Rots were in the basketball court. When they spotted Elliot coming, they daunted out on the street. Casually, they surrounded him."
This quote shows that Elliot is probably seeking revenge from his tormentors and is fed up with the bullying, he has experienced. In this situation, since his bullies approach him first, he was justified and anticipating, they would hurt him as usual, so he resorted to violence.

  5. 1. I think Chris helped Elliot and Russ because when they dropped him, it truly was an accident and Chris was the only one who felt bad for Elliot, and decided to do the right thing. I believe this is right because on pg. 58, it says, "Chris jumped ahead, from rock to rock and hopped down into the water." This shows that he would take risks (jumping from rock to rock), and go into the water (which could be dangerous) to save Elliot.

  6. 2. I think that violence is NEVER acceptable. Ever. Elliot, I think, made a very bad choice by trying to 'fight back' to Blanchette and the Jock Rots. He could have went and told his parents, and his parents could have taken it up with the principal. And just because the principal doesn't respond well to phone calls, it doesn't they can't physically go to the school. On pg. 56, it says, "He took a step back. The something was dark and not very big, hanging from his hand. The three Rots were just standing there looking when Elliot swung this thing overhand, and it came down and smacked Burke on the forehead." This quote proves that Elliot is very reckless, and yes, the Jock Rots were very mean, but there are things that you can do that don't resort to violence. In the real world, there are many people killed each day in different wars around the world. Where are we getting with this? People dying are only causing sadness to their family and friends. Violence should only ever be an "if-we-don't-have-a-choice" type solution.

    1. I mostly agree with Nina. I don't think violence is acceptable espcially in this situation with Elliot and the Jock Rots. Most of the time violence creates more violence. The only exception to this is if you are cornered and there is not other way out. Then, you may have to defend yourself.

  7. 3. I agree with Elliot's mom, and I think I understand what she means. On page 63, it says, "I know. But he has people. He has his family. And his mom's right - now he has you two." By saying that he is lucky, his mom means that even if there are people that make you feel bad, he also has people who are there to 'pick you up' when other people 'knock you down'. He has sisters, and his mom, but I think that the people who can really make you feel better are the people who are your age and are going through the same things that you are. Adults will always say stuff like, "Be yourself, and if they say something bad, ignore them, because you are not ." But the opinion of someone your age or maybe around your age is what made you feel bad, so the opinion of someone in that same category should make you feel better.

  8. A1: I think that Big Chris, a member of the Jock Rots, helped Elliot, a person anyone could pick on, get out of the river and to the hospital because he knew it was was accident and that he might have felt sorry for Elliot and that he cared a little about him. “He was leaning back against the current and he had Elliot by the shoulders, trying to pull him out of the water.”This proves that Big Chris has feelings about other people and not just the Jock Rots. I think that Big Chris is going to be a character in the book The Revealers because he helped Elliot and he might help with their experiment.”Then they turned and pounded off the bridge.”This claims that Big Chris might not be a member in the Jock Rots anymore.

  9. 4) She means that girls can be exceptionally vicious to peers when they feel endangered or jealous of someone.

"She has lovely features, and her color-it's beautiful. If i were the reigning glamour queen of your grade, I'd be worried." pg. 67

This theory can be supported by Bethany's reaction to Catalina. Russell's mom feels that Bethany is jealous of Catalina's looks, so that is why she is being mean to her.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I agree with her. By punching someone, you are bruising them and giving them an injury that will heal in a few weeks' time. By telling someone that they are stupid, or mean, or ugly, or doing something like the example on pg. 134 ("Last year when I was in seventh grade, this girl was new and I didn't like her, I didn't want her to be popular. At first, I just told people she had no friends and was weird. But I knew she would start to get friends eventually. So I became the girl's friends myself. I acted really friendly. I told her people wanted to be friends with her, and she should have a party at her house and everyone would come. She got excited and we worked on invitations together. She sent them out to a bunch of girls. Then I went to all the girls and said we were playing a joke, and not to come to the party. So on the day of the party, I know the girl was really excited and she had rented movies and she had all this food and stuff because she told me she was going to. And absolutely nobody showed up.") This example proves that girls can be quite vicious, as Russ's mom put it, because they can make a girl like that be very sad, and small. The girl that threw the party even moved to a different school. This is why I think Russ's mom is right.

  11. I think that Big Chris, who was part of the Jack Rots, helped Elliot. I think at first he grabbed Elliot because he was loyal to his friends. But after they dropped him off the bridge he went after Elliot. I think he did that because he knew he was partly responsible for Elliot falling off the bridge, and he had to get Elliot out of the water and call the ambulance. " Under the bridge Chris was in swirling water up to his waist. He was leaning back against the current and he had Elliot by the shoulders, trying to pull him out of the water. This shows that Chris does what is right, like helping Elliot after his friends dropped him off the bridge. This event probably changed Chris, and he won't be part of the Jock Rots anymore and hurt/bully anyone anymore.

  12. 1. It's from p.59 for my answer for question 1

    ReplyDelete
  13. 2. I think violence is not acceptable, unless you are trying to defend yourself from a bad guy. Even though Elliot was mad, he shouldn't have fought back with the weapon. Instead he should have talked to his mom and talk with the Jock Rots about the situation and try to get them to stop. Burke and Blanchette shouldn't have hauled him over the bridge just in case they let go and Elliot falls. I guess that were mad at Elliot and they wanted Elliot to apologize, but they shouldn't have do something dangerous. "I'm not going to forget about it!" he yelled at me. "I'm sick of what people do, okay? I'm sick of it!" "Somebody has to pay!" (p.54) Elliot is mad the bullies and has had enough of them and he wants revenge.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 3. I think that Russ's mom means that he has is family and now he has friends. Russ doesn't have a dad, and Catalina doesn't have her mom. Elliot is lucky because he has a full family and now he has friends. I agree with Russ's mom, because even though he gets bullied, he has close people and his family is complete and they love each other. " But he has people. He has his family. And his mom's right- now he has you two." (p. 63) This shows that Russ's mom is sort of jealous of him because he's not missing his mom, dad, and his sisters to help him. Russ's mom is thinking that she only has Russ and herself, but they're missing his dad.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1) I think Big Chris will no longer be a part of the Jock Rots and will help people who get bullied as the story goes on, because he felt bad for making Elliot fall of the bridge. The book states “Under the bridge Chris was in swirling water up to his waist. He was leaning back against the current and he had Elliot by the shoulders, trying to pull him out of the water.” (Pg.59). Which clearly supports that Big Chris feels sorry for Elliot, because he risked his life to save Elliot. When, if Big Chris wouldn’t have felt sorry for Elliot, he could have left Russ to save Elliot. The book also states ““…just kind of loyal and there. At least, until this happened, he was there. After what happened that day, Big Chris never acted quite the same” (p. 55). So Chris must have felt bad for what he did to Elliot and was trying to stay away from the Jock Rots.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think that Big Chris didn't actually want Elliot to get dumped in the river. Nor did Blanchette seeing that they tried to save him at the last minute. It seems that Burke was the only one who really wanted Elliot in the River. "Blanchette's head jerked upward; him arm shot up to wipe his cheek. Elliot's head dropped, Chris lunged, and then Blanchette went lunging, too. They were leaning down grappling and I got there as Elliot, his hands grabbing upward and his face wide open, came loose and fell away.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Big Chris thought that his group wouldn't drop, they wanted him to say sorry, but they accidently dropped him. If Chris ran away with his group, he would be in trouble, but he knew that if he choose to stay and help, he wouldn't get that much in trouble TO BE CONTINUED (sorry for the caps)

    ReplyDelete
  18. 4. Russ's mom means that girls at this age can be really mean and just want to bully people to make themselves feel good, and girls can also be really easily targeted by bullies. If you get physically hurt it can heal, but if someone calls you ugly of stupid, it will stay in your heart forever. " You think...you think Bethany DeMere is threatened by Catalina."- "So you think that's why Bethany's trying to crush her?" This means the Bethany is bullying Catalina to make her feel bad because she's more beautiful that Bethany and Bethany is trying to make herself cool and beautiful if Catalina feels bad and and will be scared of Bethany.( p. 67)

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1: Big Chris was not really a bully. He was in the Jock rots and was a bystander at the same time. When the two other Jock Rots went and did the terrible deed of almost murdering Elliot, Bis Chris used his common sense and backed out. When the deed was done, Chris felt bad for Elliot, so Chris and Russ helped Elliot. Chris’s actions saved a life. “Chris grabbed my arm.’Come on!’ he yelled. We ran the other way, the bridge shaking beneath us. We scrambled down the steep riverbank, and started hopping across the rocks.” (p.59) Chris helped Elliot because he was not guilty. He also helped Elliot because of his good insight. He knew that if he didn’t help, Elliot would drown.

2: I definitely am against violence in all its forms. Violence hurts people. Elliots decision was not a good one. The reason he was thrown off the bridge was because Elliot used the marble sack. If Elliot had gone to the same park without a weapon, he may have been teased, but he would not have been harmed. “You suck, Brown! You all suck! You’re all ganging up s**kh**d coward a**es, you know that?”(p.58) Because he said these words, he enticed their anger. Especially after hitting the Jock Rots, The Jocks burned even more. So, they released their madness by throwing Elliot off the bridge. Realizing what they had done, The Jock Rots ran off.

3: Russ’s mom is saying that Elliot is lucky that he didn’t drown. With a few injuries he can still live. Russ’s mom is just extremely thankful that Elliot didn’t lose his life. I agree that Russ’s mom is right because if Elliot had died, then misery would have fallen on the community and The two jocks would have gone to juvenile hall, then prison. “It’s a good family.”(p.63) This supports her opinion because Elliot did not lose his whole family.

4: She means that verbal bullying can be worse because it breaks down someone’s life slowly. I disagree with her because a few punches can degrade a person’s life much faster. “A bone crushing fist hit my face.” (p.44) This refers to the immense physical pain that was put upon Russel when Richie punched him. A punch hurts more than a word.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think Big Chris helped Russell and Catalina save Elliot maybe because he felt sorry for Elliot, or also because he thought about what he was doing. He could have realized that bullying was a bad thing to do, and stopped his bullying in the first place. I think this could change Big Chris, because he could be a friend of Catalina, Elliot, and Russell. This could change the book, because they could have an extra member of the group, which could make them less bullied, since they are hanging out with Big Chris, a more popular person at school. On page 61, Big Chris says "We didn't mean it." This could show that he didn't mean it from the beginning, when he became part of the Jock Rots, and his decision was tentative one, but the other two from the big three convinced him to be a bully. I think that once you get into bullying, you can't stop. It's kind of like drugs. But then when Big Chris saw Russell and Catalina, and how desperate they were, his thought process finally cleared up, and he was being a bad person, as a bully. Then Big Chris was sad that he was bullying people, and he was depressed, so he didn't want to go to the hospital.

  21. A2: I think that violence is acceptable only if you use it for defence. When Elliot, a bully target, hits Burke Brown, person good in aggressive sports, with a baby sock filled with marbles, he does it out of defence and payback. “...Then, From behind, Burke started unzipping his backpack.” This proves that when Elliot hit Burke, he’d done it to stop him. “...When Elliot swung this thing overhand and it came down and smacked Burke on the forehead.” This proves that Elliot did this to defend and because they had bullied him for a long time.

  22. A3: When Russ’s mom says,”I know. But he has people. He has his family. And his mom is right-now he has you two.” This proves that ,he now had Catalina, a new girl from the Philippines, and Russ, a guy that says stuff that is clanky and wrong. Is going to makes Elliot feel lucky. I agree, because when Elliot feels better, He will realize that his friends had helped him and that on what is happening and knowing that he now has friends.

  23. A1 I think Chris was not a bully to Elliot and Russ even if he was in the Jock rots. Chris also used his commen since to help Elliot. He's action saved somebody's life too. He was not guilty to save somebody too. He also helped him because he is a good insight.

    1. i disagree with Vincent. Chris was probily a bully to Elliot, just not that much.

  24. 1) Big Chris does not want to be in trouble like Richie so he helps Elliot from drowning. He also realized That making Elliot drown and almost die is really harsh. After helping him, He keeps saying "We didn't mean to do that, we're so sorry". This proves that Chris didn't mean to do that and was just following orders like he is afraid and does not want to be beat up so he helps Elliot.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 2) I believe violence is acceptable when someone tries to harm you. "As the two threats, Elliot pulls out a small bag and throws it at one of them. As soon as I checked it, it was a bag of marbles". At that point of the story, Elliot had to use violence as his own defense.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I believe Elliot is lucky and is lucky to have survived. He also has his friends by his side to support him any where he goes so is always protected by his friends. This is how Elliot is lucky to have them.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 4) I agree with her because if they think they have all the fancy stuff and they will have all the attention in school so they can use that to bully other kids. But if they don't have all the fancy stuff, they can be very vaurnable which is what his mom means.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 1) I think Chris helped Russell and Elliot because Chris is the one who was fighting with Elliot and maybe he didn't want to get in trouble. Or might might have also been that he didn't want to bully anyone and the other Jock Rots just urged him to. Maybe he was bullied when he was small and he knew that bullying wasn't right because he didn't like it.The quote that explains this is "Come on" he yelled. "Chris jumped ahead, from rock to rock. Out in the middle he put his hand on a rock and hopped down into water. I slipped and banged my knee - but I got there." (Pg. No. 59)

    ReplyDelete
  29. A2 I think voilence is okay if your using it as defense. But what happened to Elliot was too far. Elliot decision was really bad. He should not have hit on of the Jock rots too. He could have gotten beat up.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 1. Big Chris decided to helped Russ save Elliot from the river when he was thrown into the river by the Jock

"We pulled him loosely and hoisted him onto a rock." (pg.59)

Chris helped save Elliot because he felt bad for him and that he has been bullied so much and after Chris saved Elliot he stopped being a bully and was probably going to befriend Elliot, Russ, and Catalina.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Brandon: 1: I think big Chris helped out because he was scared and want to be the bully anymore. He might be tired of bullying and wants to be the better man. Pg.59 big Chris jumpes into the water, waste deep and carries Elliot on to land. 2: I think that violence is acceptable I certain situation. For example, if someone is attacking you, if your only chance of being safe violence might be your only chance.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 2) I think violence is not acceptable at sometimes and sometimes it is. For example, the bridge incident that happened in the book. Elliot was always the target of a bully. He always got bullied no matter what. He got hurt. If some one else is trying to hurt you, the only way to defend yourself is to hurt the people who are trying to hurt you. In this case this is acceptable. But If you are the bully or the person who is trying to hurt someone else in the first place, then it is not acceptable because the people you are trying to hurt are innocent and never did anything to you.

    ReplyDelete

Still, even if you are a innocent bystander, you shouldn't repetitively beat up someone who hit you

  33. 4: I partially think that Russ's mom is right, because yes, verbal and cyberbullying can be very affective to girls, but this sort of stuff can happen to anyone, boys and girls. Physical Bullying can be bad too.

"Pop quiz Q: Is there a special school for people from someplace weird who look like Olive Oyl and are the color of diareea? A: we sure hope so." (Pg. 29 Ch.Pop quiz)

The quote above can prove that that does not always happen to girls it may happen to boys. That note could be from a boy by the looks of it, I am neutral.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 3. In the book “Revealers” Russ’s mom says “He has his family. And his mom’s right—now he has you two.”. I think Russ’s mom is trying to tell Russ that he has a family; And two great friends he will never forget. I think this because Elliot never really had friends before and so it’s a new world to him. Now he has friends to care for, and friends to care for him. I agree to Russ’s mom because he does have friends now to help him in his life.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think Elliot SHOULDN'T have used violence in the Jock Rots encounter. He may have felt angry at them for bullying him, but he could have solved his problem a different way by talking to an adult or the principle.
On page 58, the book says "But the two big guys were leaning out and dangling Elliot over the river and rocks."
From the quote above, you can see that violence just leads to more violence . Talking to someone else would have been better.

    ReplyDelete
  36. think Big Chris helped Elliot because he felt bad for him. Elliot was seriously injured from being dropped. The book said "Elliot's head was rolling around," so Chris wanted to save him.
On page 59, the book said, " Chris grabbed my arm. "Come on!" He yelled. We ran the other way, the bridge shaking beneath us. We scrambled down the steep riverbank, and started hopping across the rocks."
As you can see in the quote above, Chris sounds really desperate to save Elliot as he yells "Come on!", then they both sprint and start hopping across the rocks to save him with all their might. This suggests that throughout the story, Elliot will become more nicer.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I totally agree with Aakarsh. Big Chris obviously felt bad for taking the teasing and bullying too far by throwing Elliot off the bridge. He seems that he was been pressured by his friends because his friends don't like Elliot and think it is funny to pick on him.

      Delete
  37. 2) I think that violence is acceptable only SOME times, but at other times it is useless and can also be harmful. For example, “Burke flung the thing down and flew into Elliot’s face. He was screaming at him, screaming all the curse words you could say-”(Pg. 57). The saying what you do comes back to you can be applied here. Since Elliot tried to solve his problem with violence he got hurt in return. In SOME circumstances, such as someone trying to harm/ or kill you violence can be used to defend/ protect yourself from harm. If you use violence always the outcome will turn out to be worse than it always is such as when you use it like Eliot.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Question 1 : Chris helped Russell and Elliot on the bridge because he was beginning to change into a better person. "Chris grabbed my arm. 'Come on' he said. We rushed towards him, the bridge shaking underneath us" Page 59. This quote explains that Chris doesn't want to get into trouble anymore; he knows that this was a bad situation, and he doesn't want it to happen again. I think that Chris will become a better person as the story goes along, and he will no longer be hanging out with the 'Jock Rots'. I also think that he might begin to help Catalina, Elliot, and Russell in their quest to stop bullying.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1) I think Big Chris helped Elliot and Russ because he didn't mean to drop Elliot off of the bridge and get him hurt. Yes, he was a Jock Rot, but unlike the other Jock Rots, he wasn't bullying Elliot to get him injured. On page 55, Russ said that Big Chris was “just kind of loyal and there." This quote is evidence that Big Chris was just loyal to the other Jock Rots, so he just happened to be there with them when they were bullying Elliot. Yes, he was helping to bully Elliot, but this quote proves that he just did this because he was loyal, not because he wanted to. He wasn’t like a huge supporter for bullying, I think that he was just intent on proving his loyalty to the other Jock Rots. When Elliot got injured, Big Chris was shocked that he had actually hurt Elliot, and he realized that his loyalty to the other bullies was nothing important. Even if the others got in trouble for dropping Elliot, he felt that it was his duty to help Russ and Elliot. I think the foreshadowing and the bridge event are going to continue to change Big Chris as a character in the novel because he gradually comes to realize that he shouldn’t be loyal to the other Jock Rots, that they would only continue to hurt other people. Big Chris finally will understand that hurting others does not benefit anyone, it just results in losses.

    ReplyDelete
  40. 3) I agree with what Russ’s mom says about Elliot after the “bridge incident”. Russ’s mom says “He has his family. And his mom’s right—now he has you two” (Pg. 63). I think Russ’s mom means that Elliot only used to have his parents, but now Russ and Catalina have become Elliot’s friends so they will also make Elliot feel better when he gets bullied. One reason I agree with Russ’s mom is because Elliot used to be on his own, so people would bully him, but now they will be a little scared to since Catalina and Russ are with Elliot to stand up to him.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think Russ's mom means that even though Elliot was badly hurt, he would at least still heal over time. He also had his family and his friends to help and support him.
In the middle of page 62, it says,"My mom went over and took Mrs. Gekewicz's hands. Elliot's mom squeezed them, then she came up to me. "Thank you, Russel," she said. "Thank you. You probably saved his life."
In the quote above, Elliot's mom is very grateful to Russ. He saved Elliot's life. What Russ's mom is trying to say is that just like in this example, Elliot is lucky because his friends will always be there to help.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 1. Chris just wanted to be part of this big group, bullying elliot, but when he got hurt, that was not chris's plan. His group left, but he stayed to help. He didn't mean to. his group wanted elliot to say sorry. Pg 61 "Chris didn't come. He was pretty upset. "We didn't mean to," he kept saying while we were waiting for the ambulance. "We didn't mean to."

    ReplyDelete
  43. 4) I agree with Russ’s mom with the reaction she has to Elliot’s “bridge incident” and Catalina’s bullying. Russ’s mom says “Girls at this age can be really vicious, and so vulnerable. I almost think it’s more serious business than you boys with your physical stuff.” (Pg. 77-78). In my opinion verbal bullying hurts more than physical bullying since the damage done be physical bullying will wipe off, but the one done by verbal bullying will sting you for rest of your life. I think that Catalina getting befriended by some of her friends and bullied by them should hurt more than Richie just punching Russ or the Jock Rots pushing Elliot off the bridge.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think what Russ's mom is trying to say is that usually you heal from a physical attack but you can never heal or forget verbal and cyber bullying with the girls.
On page 68, it says,"You think that's worse than being dropped off a bridge? Or punched in the face?" My mom glanced over at me. "I'm not saying any of this is easy. But that girl . . . she's in a new country. She doesn't have her mom here. Try to imagine how it must feel to have people in her new school suddenly turn on her."
I agree with her because of this quote. The verbal bullying she's getting is far worse because she already feels bad enough when she has almost no one that she knows here.

  45. I agree with Shruti's answer to question 2 and also respectfully disagree with one statement. I agree with her claim; violence is acceptable only sometimes. I also agree with the fact that using violence to defend/ protect yourself is ok. I don't agree with her when she says it was ok for Elliot to use violence, since Elliot started it in the first place.

  47. Question 2: I think that the violence Elliot used against the Jock Rots was acceptable for two reasons. First of all, Elliot was trying to protect himself since he was being punched and hit. He was not doing it to hurt an innocent person for no reason. That is when violence is not acceptable. " The three rots were just standing there looking when Elliot swung this thing over hand, and it came down and smacked Burke on the forehead." This quote proves that Elliot was being violent, but he was doing it to protect himself. If Elliot had swung the marbles before the Jock Rots had starting hitting and slapping him, then that would be bad violence.

We scrambled down the steep riverbank, and started hopping across the rocks. This quote shows that Chris is trying not to get in trouble. If, someone saw Chris save Elliot he would not get in trouble. The quote is from page 59. Chris helped Elliot because he felt bad for him. Chris will change into not bullying other people because he is afraid of getting into trouble example page 59.

  50. A4: Russ's mom means that girls can be just as mean as boys and maybe even meaner. "I'm just saying it isn't easy. But that girl...she's in a new country. She doesn't have a mom here. try to imagine how it must feel to have people in her new school, and suddenly turn on her." This proves that if you just came into a new school, and didn’t have many family members with her, and anyone could make you feel uncomfortable I agree with her because you can be verbally bullied and it won’t show the way physical bullying does. Physical bullying leaves a mark or a bruise, people can tell someone punched you and it can soon heal and be regular again but verbal bullying doesn’t leave and mark it just hurts your feelings and people wouldn't notice much.

  51. 2. Violence is sometimes acceptable. If someone is going to hurt you( shoot, stab etc.) using violence is okay because the situation is life or death. If you are in Burke's shoes, slapping Elliot is not okay. "Blanchette slapped him hard on the shoulder, and Elliot stumbled and Blanchette grinned." This quote is from page 56. Blanchette should have not slapped him for no reason. In Elliot's case, you should not slap him back. Elliot should have ran home and told his parents.

I completely agree with Nikitha's answer to question 4; physical bullying will go away over time, but verbal bullying will stay in your heart forever and hurt you for the rest of your life. I respectfully disagree with Chuck's answer to question 2. Chuck stated that "Elliot was trying to protect himself since he was being punched and hit." I disagree with this opinion, because Elliot could have (and should have) spoken to another person about his bullying situation before the bridge incident, but he decided to take matters into his own hands and hit back at the Jock Rots. If Elliot had gone to an adult, he probably wouldn't have been dropped off of a bridge.

    1. No, Anna. He was surronded by the Jock Rots while being hit-- he had no time to go get an adult. Although, if he had told an adult beforehand, and the adult approached them, he would just be bullied more for being a tattle tale.

  56. 1. When Russ, the main character of the Revealers book, describes Big Chris, a bully (but not REALLY mean) as “just kind of loyal and there (page 55),” he is foreshadowing what’s going to happen later in the chapter by adding, “At least, until this happened, he was there. After what happened that day, Big Chris never acted quite the same (still page 55).” He’s subtly hinting that something happens to or involves Big Chris that’s very important, life-changing, or maybe just something he’ll remember for a long time. It seems like this event will make Big Chris a bit crazy or confused, which is the meaning of “not really there.” When Chris and his bullying friends ‘accidentally’ dropped Elliot (a geek who was bullied by everyone) into a river while dangling him off of a bridge, Big Chris helped Russ, who was watching the bullying in alarm, pull Elliot out of the creek. This is shown on page 59, “Under the bridge Chris was in swirling water up to his waist. He was leaning back against the current and he had Elliot by the shoulders, trying to pull him out of the water. Elliot’s head was rolling around.” I think that since Chris didn’t mean to drop Elliot into the river, he felt guilty and wanted to help. He might have also just not wanted to get into more trouble than he already was; killing someone is a lot worse than dropping them in a river!

  57. 2. I believe that violence is never acceptable except in very extreme situations. The only time violence should ever be used is when something happens like someone is going to kill another person; then the person can use self-defense. Elliot took out his anger on the Jock Rots, a trio bullying him, on his way home one day, as written on page 56; “The three Rots were just standing there looking when Elliot swung this thing overhand, and it came down and smacked Burke in the forehead.” In my opinion, this was an unjust use of violence. Even though the Jock Rots had been bullying him, Elliot could have just talked to an adult about the situation instead of turning to violence. Harming another person is not the answer. Most of the time, asking for help or telling the person to stop is much more effective. Hurting the other person will just make them want to bully you again/more. When Elliot hit one of the Jock Rots, the bullies dangled him off of the edge of a bridge and dropped him off of it (“accidentally”)!

  58. 3. Russ’s mother is probably trying to say that even though Elliot gets bullied often, he has people on his side, like Russ and Catalina, to support him. On page 63, she says, “He has his family. And his mom’s right--now he has you two.” Russ’s mom was conveying the message that it’s harder to withstand bullying if you don’t have any support or friends. In this quote, she says that his family, Russ, and Catalina were providing support and help for him. Elliot was worse off before he met Russ and Catalina because he only had his family for support, but when he made friends, they found a way to stop the bullying (The Revealers messages telling about bullying experiences that they were sending to all of the students). If Elliot was standing alone with no family or friends against the bullies, he might have given up or done something really bad (worse than hitting them with marbles in a sock) to stop them from bullying him; perhaps he might have even decided to commit suicide.

  59. 4. On pages 67-68, Russ’s mom says, “Girls at this age can be really vicious, and so vulnerable. I almost think it’s more serious business than you boys with your physical stuff.” She’s talking about how a popular girl in Russ’s grade, Bethany DeMere, was bullying Catalina verbally by trash talking her. Russ’s mom means that when someone bullies another with words, the person can feel bad about themselves for a very long time, but if someone hurts another, the wound will eventually heal. I completely agree with Russ’s mother. If someone’s verbally bullied, the insults will stay in their heart forever and hurt them for the rest of their life. The only time physical bullying might be worse than verbal bullying is if someone dies of physical harm.

  60. I think that violence is sometimes acceptable, and sometimes not acceptable. Violence is absolutely not acceptable when you are intentionally trying to hurt someone and you are not doing self defense. When someone is trying to hurt you physically, I think that people can fight back, but you can only fight back with the same extreme level maximum as your tormenter. For example, if someone punches you, you shouldn’t take out a hammer and try to bash the other person on the head. That would be way too extreme. I think that Elliot’s violence towards the Jock Rots was not acceptable, because he was looking for a fight. On page 56, Russ says, “All day Elliot had acted edgy, fidgety, like a nervous little bird. Catalina wouldn’t look at him or me or anyone. I knew they were both really upset. I had a bad feeling about almost everything.” This quote proves that Elliot had something up his sleeve. Elliot usually doesn’t act like that, so I can infer from this quote that he was planning something dangerous, something that would make him nervous. Elliot was planning to fight back against the Jock Rots, to get revenge. This is not acceptable, because Elliot was looking for a fight. Also, further into page 56, Russ witnesses this, “Casually they surrounded him. Blanchette slapped him hard on the shoulder; Elliot stumbled and Blanchette grinned. Then, from behind, Burke started unzipping his backpack. Elliot reached in his jacket pocket and pulled something out. He took a step back. The something was dark and not very big, hanging from his hand. The three Rots were just standing there looking when Elliot swung this thing overhand, and it came down and smacked Burke on the forehead.” From this quote, I can see that Elliot was the one who attacked severely first. He shouldn’t have done that, only when the Jock Rots tried to hurt him he should have swung the sock. This is an example of unacceptable violence. However, it was also unreasonable for the Jock Rots to drop Elliot off of the bridge. That act was way more extreme than Elliot’s sock swinging. The Jock Rots also didn’t need to get revenge, because they had hurt Elliot many more times than he had hurt them.

    1. Elizabeth, you said that 'He shouldn't have done that, only when the Jock Rots tried to hurt him he should have swung the sock'. Actually, the Jock Rots did sort of hurt him before he swung his sock. Blanchette slapped him and Burke tried to look through his bag. 'Blanchette slapped him hard on the shoulder; Elliot stumbled and Blanchette grinned. Then, from behind, Burke started unzipping his backpack.' (Page 56). Even though Burke wasn't trying to hurt him, Elliot was still trying to protect his belongings.

    2. Adding on to my other reply, you said that Elliot was the one who 'attacked severely first'. I think that it was acceptable for Elliot to do so because almost every single time the Jock Rots approached him, they hurt him, so Elliot was sure that they would harm him in some way, so he anticipated that they would bully him. Therefore, I believe he has the right to defend himself, even if it was a little too severe, as he probably knew for sure that they would bully him.

      Delete
    3. 1) When the Jock Rots ‘accidentally’ pushed Elliot off a bridge, Big Chris helped Elliot get to the hospital even though he was one of the Jock Rots. I think he did so because he felt guilty that just because Elliot hit Burke with the stuffed sock, they pushed him over the bridge. I think that he thought that their own actions were too ‘severe’ compared to what Elliot did to them. It probably also made Big Chris guilty that Elliot felt so tortured by them that he would use such violence to defend himself. It might change him because Chris might stand up for Elliot since he felt guilty that Elliot was seriously hurt. Maybe later in the book, instead of bullying Elliot with the rest of the Jock Rots, he might try to protect Elliot. “Chris didn’t come. He was pretty upset” (Pg 61) This shows that he was upset and felt guilty of his actions.

      2) I think violence is acceptable in certain circumstances, like when you are trying to defend yourself, such as when Elliot was being bullied by the Jock Rots. ‘Blanchette slapped him hard on the shoulder; Elliot stumbled...Burke started unzipping his backpack...Elliot reached in his jacket pocket and pulled something out…Elliot swung this thing overhand, and it came down and smacked Burke on the forehead.’ (Page 56). This shows that Elliot used violence as self defense, because Blanchette hit him and Burke unzipped his backpack first, so Elliot tried to protect himself and his belongings in self defense by using violence. Even though Elliot’s actions were a bit critical compared to the fact that Burke and Blanchette only slapped him and unzipped his backpack, I think that it was acceptable because the Jock Rots have always been tormenting him, so he was more than sure that they would try to hurt him, so he defended himself using violence. Along with that, he was probably so fed up by the bullying he had experienced for so many years that he just couldn’t take it anymore and had to let out all his anger.

      3) Russell doesn’t understand his mother because he thinks that Elliot is unlucky. This is because everyone at school who wants to can torment him. ’Mom, he gets dumped on by anybody who feels like it, anytime they feel like it.’ This quote shows that Elliot is bullied by anyone who feels like it, so Russell doesn’t understand why his mother says he is lucky. I think that Russ’s mom is right about Elliot being lucky. ‘He has his family...now he has you two.’ (Page 63) This is evidence that even though Elliot is often bullied, he has his family that cares about him.

      4) When Russell’s mom was comparing the physical bullying that happened with Elliot and Russell and the rude notes sent to Catalina by a popular girl at school, she says that the bullying Catalina experiences might even be worse than what Elliot and Russ experienced.‘I almost think it’s more serious business than you boys with your physical stuff’ (Page 67-68). I agree with Russell’s mom about the fact that she thinks that the bullying Catalina experiences is more serious than the bullying Elliot and Russell experience. Physical bullying can last for a little while until the wound heals and you forget about it. But verbal bullying can hurt someone’s feelings and the victim could remember what was said to them for a long, long time, maybe even for their entire life. ‘She doesn't have a mom here. try to imagine how it must feel to have people in her new school, and suddenly turn on her." This quote also connects with question 3. The quote explains that even though Catalina’s feelings could be hurt for a long time, it makes it even worse that Catalina doesn’t have many people who are supportive of her, like her mother, with her. So in a way, Elliot is more lucky than Catalina because at least he had someone to go to for support when he was being bullied.

      Delete
  61. 3) I agree with Russ’s mom that Elliot is lucky, because now Elliot has his family, Catalina, and Russ. On page 63, Russ’s mom says, “He has his family. And his mom’s right-now he has you two.” This quote shows that Elliot is lucky because now he has more people to support and care for him. Also, being with Russ and Catalina started to give Elliot new ideas, and he began to realize that he needed to stand up for himself. Before meeting the two, Elliot never tried to protect himself. When the three became friends, he realized that the bullying towards him and towards everyone needed to stop. Elliot discovered this when he learned about Catalina’s experience with Bethany; it made him mad. He realized that somebody had to do something about bullying, and he decided to be that person and stand up for himself. This taught him an important lesson in life, and being with Russ and Catalina could teach him more about lifelong skills. The bridge incident was not too bad, because it is just one of the negative effects of standing up for yourself.

  62. Question 3: I agree with what Russell's mom has to say about Elliot. “He has his family. And his mom’s right—now he has you two.” Page 63. What Russell's mom means in this quote is that Elliot is in a better position then he used to be. It used to be that he had no friends, and was being bullied. Now he has two friends, Catalina and Russell. He is also not being bullied as much because he has stregnth in numbers; he is alone walking around in the halways so he is less likely to be targeted. So, even though that he just fell off a bridge, he is still lucky and he is in a better position that he was before he became friends with Russell and Catalina.

    ReplyDelete
  63. 1) I think that Big Chris helped Elliot and Russ during the bridge incident because he felt bad for Elliot and realized how much the Jock Rots hurt other people. Big Chris probably wasn’t with the Jock Rots to bully people; I think that he hung out with the Jock Rots because he wanted to feel like he was better than everyone else. I think that Big Chris could slightly connect to how Elliot felt being the target, and he wanted to help out so that he could stop making people feel hurt and bullied. On p. 55, Russ calls Big Chris “just kind of loyal and there.” This quote shows that he didn’t join into the bullying that the other Jock Rots did, but still stayed with them. I think that Big Chris was trying to show his worth and loyalty to the Jock Rots but secretly thought that what they were doing was wrong.

  64. 2) In my opinion, violence is not acceptable. There is always a way to avoid, argue against, and protect yourself the “opponent” before you must resort to violence. It would be tempting to hit or punch someone back, but it would be best to bring the matter to people who care about you, and then find a way to avoid the bully or make them feel uncomfortable in a way that the bully would stop or flee. Of course, some pure “evil” people would just laugh at defensive words, and that’s when I think violence is only acceptable.

On p. 55, Russ watches the bridge incident-- “Then, from behind, Burke started unzipping his backpack. Elliot reached in his jacket pocket and pulled something out. He took a step back. The something was dark and not very big, hanging from his hand. The three Rots were just standing there looking when Elliot swung this thing overhand, and it came down and smacked Burke on the forehead.” This violence done by Elliot is, in my opinion, unacceptable. I think this because came prepared with just a weapon ready, and didn’t think about how he could work away around the bullies. It’s like Elliot wanted to fight the Jock Rots physically, to show them how he feels. It’s also unacceptable because Elliot knew he was doing something wrong, taking a step in front of teasing and maybe some slapping. Violence really does not negotiate a problem, unless we’re talking about wars, and there is always someone hurt when the matter could have possibly be sorted out peacefully. It’s unfair that people with more power, confidence, and everything to lose can come out on a fight with an advantage, and people like Elliot that are unsure and doubted with so much pressure, can’t overcome a bully with physical will.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I feel that Big Chris helped Elliot and Russ during the bridge incident because he was considerate of Elliot and deep inside actually felt bad for him. Also, Big Chris probably was getting tired of bullying others just because the other Jock Rots, Burke and Blanchette, were. On page 55, Russ tells the readers, "Big Chris was big and acorn headed but not dumb at all, actually, just kind of loyal and there." This shows that since Chris is a loyal guy, he probably is staying with the Jock Rots only because he wants to be loyal to his so-called friends, Burke and Blanchette. Furthermore, Russ states that he is not dumb at all, so he probably didn't want to do something so inconsiderate as to almost kill someone.
I think that the foreshadowing and bridge event will change Big Chris as a character from being a partial bully to becoming one of Elliot and Russ' good friends. On page 59, according to Russ, "Out in the middle he put his hand on a rock and hopped down into water." This shows how urgently Chris is trying to save Elliot, and that he is doing so much just to have a chance at saving Elliot's life. Elliot will probably thank Russ and Chris very much for saving his life later on in the book, and this event will probably create an inseparable bond between them.

  66. I believe that violence is sometimes acceptable. I feel that violence is acceptable when using it as a form of self-defence. In my opinion, violence can also be used for safety or in times of danger. For example, in a life-or-death situation where you are forced to use violence, violence should be permitted. I feel that violence should be prohibited when not vitally needed. For instance, if you want to take revenge on somebody, violence is definitely not a good way to do it. I think that Elliot's use of violence was acceptable in the case of the bridge incident because he had no other way to stop being bullied, and he knew that the Jock Rots were capable of hurting him pretty bad. Also, there was absolutely no other way to get the Jock Rots to stop bullying him, so when Elliot was fed up with the bullying, violence was the only option left. On page 56, in the perspective of Russ, who is watching, "Blanchette slapped him hard on the shoulder; Elliot stumbled and Blanchette grinned. Then, from behind, Burke started unzipping his backpack." This shows that the Jock Rots were already using violence against Elliot, so according to my opinion, what Elliot did was fair game. However, there was no need for the Jock Rots to carry Elliot to the bridge as revenge, because they were the ones who had started the bullying. I just don't understand why if the Jock Rots use violence so many times, Elliot doesn't retaliate, but the one time Elliot does retaliate, the Jock Rots "accidentally" dump him off a bridge into water full of rocks.

  67. I think violence is acceptable, but only under certain conditions. If you fight people for no reason, then violence is completely unacceptable, because you are just using it to hurt people, and it has no purpose there. An example where violence is acceptable is when you are playing sports. Football requires violence, because you have to tackle people to win, otherwise there is no point in playing football. Since "... Elliot swung this thing overhand, and it came down and smacked Burke on the forehead. Burke screamed and went down on one knee." This is an example of where violence is acceptable, because Elliot was using violence, in the form of a sock with marbles in it, for self-defense. This is actually one of the best examples (so far) for self-defense, in the whole entire book. If someone is about to kill you, don’t you want to at least try to defend yourself? Unless you are suiciding, are disabled (no arms and legs), or are a sacrifice, you will defend yourself, because life is an expensive thing, like a treasure.

  68. 4) I think that Russ’s mom means that girls like Bethany often get jealous of someone who might overpass or endanger their popularity, and they will bully that person mercilessly to hurt him/her. On page 67, she says, “She has lovely features, and her color-it's beautiful. If I were the reigning glamour queen of your grade, I'd be worried.” This quote shows that Bethany could feel threatened by Catalina’s beauty, and become jealous of her. Then, on pages 67-68, Russ’s mom says, “Girls at this age can be really vicious, and so vulnerable. I almost think it’s more serious business than you boys with your physical stuff.” She is talking about verbal bullying, specifically Bethany’s bullying towards Catalina. She thinks that verbal bullying is worse than physical bullying. When she says that girls are so vulnerable, she means that girls will feel threatened very easily, and therefore will try to make that feeling go away by bullying the person that is threatening her. I agree with Russ’s mom that verbal bullying is worse than physical bullying because physical wounds will disappear over time, but hurtful words will always remain in your heart. Often, verbal bullying becomes severe, people might even start sending death threats, and these words will never go away.

  69. On page 63, when Russ' mom calls Elliot lucky after the bridge incident, I agree with her opinion. Russ' mom is trying to say that Elliot is lucky that he is still here today. This only happened because he had friends (Russ, Chris, and Catalina) to help him out and call for help. He was lucky that his friends took the initiative of standing up for him so that Elliot didn't get killed or get bullied even more. Elliot is also lucky to have good family and friends to take care of him after the bridge incident. On page 63, Russ' mom says, "'I know. But he has people. He has his family. And his mom's right - now he has you two.'" This suggests that Elliot should be grateful for having somebody there for him. Not everybody will be helped to move on in life by somebody. Elliot has his family and friends there to physically take care of and mentally encourage him, which is always going to help when you are severely injured.

  70. 1. I think that big Chris decided to help Elliot because he knew that that was the right choice. I also think big Chris helped elliot because he knew he was partly responsible for Elliot falling off the bridge. He helped his friends grab Elliot at first because I think he thought that no one was going to get hurt. I think that only burke really wanted to hurt Elliot. Russ says, "Under the bridge Chris was in swirling water up to his waist. He was leaning back against the currents and had Elliot by the shoulders, trying to pull him out of the water. Elliot's head was rolling around" (pg 59) This quote shows that while Blanchette and Burke ran off, Chris helped Russ save Elliot. I think that this event changed Chris because now he doesn't want to hurt anyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  71. 2. I think that violence is situational. In some cases violence can be acceptable. For example, when Elliot hits Burke on the head with the sock, Elliot is defending himself. If someone is trying to hurt you, violence is acceptable. Elliot’s act of violence is acceptable because he is defending himself from the bullying. Russ says, “Blanchette grabbed the thing and yanked hard. Elliot stumbled but held on; Blanchette pulled really hard and Elliot let go and fell in the gravel on the roadside. But he scrambled right back up. He stood there, kind of crouched. Burke was howling, down on his knee. He opened his hands and looked for blood or something. Then he looked at the object in his friend’s hand.” (pg 57) This quote explains that while Elliot hit Burke with the object, Blanchette acted with violence again. Elliot used violence in his anger, but Blanchette, Big Chris, and Burke want to hurt Elliot. Elliot was trying to defend himself, so in this case violence is acceptable.

  72. To paraphrase what Russ' mom is saying on pages 67 and 68, girl bullies at Russ' age are very, very mean, and the victims are easily bullied and vulnerable to bullying, so the victims of this bullying will be hurt very badly. These girls will not be physically hurt as much as they will be emotionally and mentally hurt. When you are mentally hurt, it could feel much worse deep inside you, and it could cause you to do very bad things, such as commit suicide. Russ' mom thinks that feelings getting hurt and sticking with you for a long time is worse than the physical bullying that some people endure. On page 68, Russ' mom tells Russ about Catalina, "'I'm not saying any of this is easy. But that girl ... she's in a new country. She doesn't have her mom here. Try to imagine how it must feel to have people in her new school suddenly turn on her.'" However, I disagree with Russ' mom. Physical bullying can have long-term effects, while mental and emotional bullying can be shaken off; it may take a while to move on from mental and emotional bullying, but you eventually will. Some effects of physical bullying can be pretty severe. On page 59, Russ comments that, "Elliot's head was rolling around." Imagine if Elliot had died. He was lucky to escape with only a minor concussion and a badly sprained ankle. If Russ and Chris weren't there, Elliot would probably be dead or severely injured by now. Now, would you rather be bullied mentally and emotionally, or be paralyzed waist down for the rest of your life, making it incapable for you to walk ever again?

  73. 3. I agree with Russ’s mom. I agree with her because I think she knows that Elliot has two very nice friends that will help him, and that his family is there for him too. I also think that his mom is partially wrong because like Russ says, “Mom, he gets dumped on by anyone who feels like it, anytime they feel like it.” (pg 63) I think that Russ is implying that Elliot isn’t lucky because now he is going to get bullied more. I also think that russ’s mom is right because Russ and Catalina are very nice and will help Elliot.

    ReplyDelete
  74. 4. I agree with her because I think she means verbal bullying is worse than physical bullying. I think she means this because she knows how Catalina feels. She also means that girls can be mean when they feel threatened or that they think someone else is going to be better than them. "She has lovely features, and her color-it's beautiful. If I were the reigning glamour queen of your grade, I'd be worried." (pg. 67) This quote shows that she thinks that Bethany is worried that Catalina will be prettier than her, and she will lose all of her control. So Bethany decided to bully her instead.

  75. Q.1 I think that Big Chris was never the same and would change more in the story because he is sorry for what his friends did to Elliot and wants to not be like them too much anymore. On page 61 it was stated," He was pretty upset. "We didn't mean to," he kept saying while we were waiting for the ambulance,"We didn't mean to."" I think that this means that he felt very sorry for what he and his friends had done to injure Elliot. This leads me to conclude that Big Chris helped Russ get Elliot out of the water because he felt bad for what his friends did.

Q.2 I believe that violence is not ever acceptable because words are bad but so is violence. Violence can kill or badly injure someone and by hurting someone physically, they are also saying that they don't like that person. For example, when Elliot was dropped off of the bridge, he was almost killed and when he fought back, it was chaos and people were getting hurt. On page 57, it was stated," The three Rots were just standing there looking when Elliot

swung this thing overhand, and it came down and smacked Burke on the forehead. Burke screamed and went down on one knee He was holding his forehead and face in both hands.” I think that this quote explains that violence leads to even more violence because after Elliot hit one of the Jock Rots, they carried him off and “accidentally” dropped him off of the bridge, almost killing him.

Q.3 I think that Russ' mom means that Elliot is lucky because even though he is bullied, he has Russ and Catalina to support and be there for him. On page 63 Russ’ mom said, “I know, but he has people. He has his family. And his mom’s right-now he has you two.” she means that Eliot may be going through a lot but his family and his friends are helping him to get through it all. When Elliot was dropped off the bridge, Russ (and Big Chris) helped him and pulled him out of the water to save his life if he( or they) didn't do that, Eliot would drown and would have died.

Q.4 I think she means that the girl’s verbal bullying is just as serious as physical bullying, and sometimes even worse. Verbal bullying even affects people who isn’t even the person being bullied. For example, on page “I'm not gonna forget about it!” he yelled at me. "I'm sick of what people do, okay? I'm SICK of it!” this quote proves that bullying can affect other people; because of Catalina being bullied, Elliot went crazy and started to fight back when people bully him.

  76. 2. I think that violence is acceptable in some situations only. In situations such as you are getting bullying, then you can use self-defence. When Elliot intentionally uses violence and actually plans it, is another matter. I don not agree with what he did because what he violence just because they he doesn’t like them. This is not a good reason to harm someone.

    ReplyDelete
  77. 3. What Russ’ mom mean is that Elliot is lucky because there are people to support him even if he is of often bullied. This is shown in the quote “He has his family. And his mom’s right—now he has you two.”

    ReplyDelete
  78. 1) I think that Big Chris, one of Elliot's main tormentors, helped Elliot and Russ in the bridge incident because he never intended to hurt Elliot. Also, I think he is not really a bully in the inside. He probably cares about others and does what is right. To prove this, “ And there was Big Chris. Big Chris was big and acorn headed but not dumb at all, actually, just kind of loyal and there.” (pg.55) “Chris grabbed my arm. “Come one!” he yelled. ...Chris jumped ahead, from rock to rock. Under the bridge Chris was swirling in water up to his waist. He was leaning back against the current and he has Elliot by the shoulders, trying to pull him out of the water his shows that Big Chris is not a “a bad guy” but more like a nicer version of a bully. This also shows that he knows right from wrong; he helped create the problem, so he should help solve it too.

  79. 4. I think that Russ’ mom thinks that the way that way that the girls in the book are bullinging each other is much worse than the books than the boys are. In other word, Russ’ mom thinks that verbal bullying is worse than physical bullying. “Girls at this age can be really vicious, and so vulnerable. I almost think it’s more serious business than you boys with your physical stuff.”
This quote proves my statement. I agree with her because wounds can heal over time but emotional wounds take a really long time.

    1. Big Chris changed by not being the bully and decided to help elliot out of the water. Maybe because he didn’t want to be the bully anymore or didn’t want to seem like a bully any more.” I saw Big Chris jumping from rock to rock then jumping into the water and picked up Elliot from the water on his shoulders and brought him to shore.
    2. I think violence is acceptable in self defense situations, like for example attacking a robber that tried to hit you with a bat. I think elliot attacking the Jock Rots was kind of an attack and a defense. It was like a attack because he went up to them and hit them, but he also attack because of all the things the Jock Rots did to him. I think it’s mostly an attack for them to get the message to not mess with Elliot.

    3. I think Russ’s Mom is trying to say that he is lucky to have a caring mom and dad that will do a lot to help Elliot. I think Russ doesn’t understand because Russ lost his dad and he is think about the bad side only. Also, Russ doesn’t usually think of the bright side in the book i noticed.

    4. I think that girls fighting is more seriously because they will always try to take down there enemy’s and girls are usually sensitive about their body and looks. Girls try to look beautiful and try to make other girls look ugly sometimes, it can be very bad like girls can take drugs to make them thinner and beautiful. This is a big problem and it can cost lives, everyone should put a stop to bullying.

  81. 4. She means that Verbally bullying is much more worse than physical bullying. I totally agree with her because physical bullying may inscribe a mark onto your physical body. but verbal bullying may inscribe a mark into your mind/heart. I would rather break my leg than be thinking about all the painful things people said to me all the time.

  82. Q3)
Russ's mom must be thinking that Elliot is lucky to have supportive family members and friends who will always be there for him when she tells Russ and Catalina,"“He's lucky...He has his family. And his mom’s right—now he has you two.”(pg.63) I actually agree with Russ' mom's statement. Elliot survived his injuries and came out of the hospital healthy except for a broken leg and a concussion. He's also lucky because he has people who deeply care for him and help him all the way. These people are his family members who protect him, love him and provide him security. Russ and Catalina also share their friendship with Elliot and seem like they'll always be there for him in times of need and support him.

  83. 4) When Russ' mom says,"Girls at this age can be really vicious, and so vulnerable. I almost think it’s more serious business than you boys with your physical stuff,”(pg. 67) I agree with her. Verbal bullying can really hurt a person emotionally. They may show signs that they don't seem to care, but it can be really damaging, and even long lasting. Physical bullying definitely hurts and is painful, but your injuries can always heal over and over again. However, verbal bullying is totally different. It can remain with you and torment you throughout your entire life. Physical bullying can scare your body while verbal bullying can scar your heart.

  84. 1) PREDICTING: In the chapter “Bird Boy,” Russ describes Big Chris as, “…just kind of loyal and there. Explain.

I think that Big Chris rescued Elliot from the water under the bridge because he was a not really friend with Blanchette and Burke, he just didn’t want to be a target. As Russ describes him on page 55 as, “just kind of loyal and there.” Big Chris could have been bullied by Blanchette and Burke, or possibly intimidated by them, so he decided to just to follow along with them, so he would not become the next victim. He may have been too worried to stand up for himself.

Chris was probably a really nice person. He followed the two other bullies, but after they threw Elliot off the bridge, he couldn’t take it. On page 59, Russ describes how Big Chris “jumped ahead, from rock to rock.” This shows that Chris really didn’t care about himself, and that he just wanted to save Elliot.

The foreshadowing in the book shows that Chris may be a good guy after all.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I think that violence is never acceptable, because without violence is peace. Some people can argue that violence is acceptable for self-defense purposes, but you wouldn’t need self-defense in the first place if there wasn’t violence. Relating to the story, if the Jock Rots were nice to Elliot, Elliot wouldn’t have taken a vacation to the Hospital. The Jock Rot’s bullying and teasing got Elliot to attack them, and then Elliot got thrown off the bridge. Those are all examples of violence. On page 54, Elliot says “SOMEBODY HAS TO PAY!” By this he means, the violence directed towards him and his friends.

  86. Russ’s mom is probably thinking that if you have family, you have someone caring for you. If you have someone caring for you, then you can relax at home or whenever they are with you. He also has friends, that support him when his family isn’t around, like on page 54 when Russ calms Elliot. (Quote of page 54 is too long to put here, but it is the whole page.) I agree with Russ’s mom. If Elliot runs into trouble, he always has his friends on his side.

  89. 4. On p. 67-68 in the novel, Russ’s mom reacts to Elliot’s bridge incident, and Catalina’s bullying, by saying: “Girls at this age can be really vicious, and so vulnerable. I almost think it’s more serious business than you boys with your physical stuff.” She means, by this, that girls are better and more sophisticated and sensitive than boys. The fact that she said that GIRLS can be mean by verbal bullying and that BOYS are always physical is very wrong and discriminatory. I do not agree at all, and believe that everybody is the same, and that boys and girls can be strong, and that both boys and girls tease, not just girls tease, and that boys and girls can be physical. I am slightly offended by this quote. Russ’s mom should think before she talks. There could be other meaning though. She could also mean that verbal bullying is more serious than physical. I disagree with this as well. Verbal bullying may hurt inside, but it would be better to be teased than beat up with crutches and a neck brace. I do not agree with what she says, but I guess what she believes is up to her.

  92. I think Russell’s mother is trying to say that Elliot is lucky, because he has Russell and Catalina for help. I think she is trying to say that before, Elliot had no friends, and he had no one to rely on if he was bullied. On page 62, Elliot’s mother says, “Thank you, Russell. Thank you. You probably saved his life.” This leads to Russell’s mother saying that Elliot is lucky, because if Elliot didn’t have Russell, and was all by himself, he would have probably died, given that he fell off of a bridge, and submerged it water unconsciously. When Russell’s mother says that Elliot is lucky, I think she is trying to say “lucky [compared to other years of Elliot’s life].”

    ReplyDelete
  93. What Russell’s mother is trying to say is probably the fact that she thinks verbal bullying is more severe than physical bullying. I also think this, and there are several examples to why verbal bullying is more harsh than physical bullying. One example is: Physical bullying is written on your body, and does disappear over time. Verbal bullying is written on your heart, and is there for eternity. This is very true, because you will always think about the thing that a particular person said to you, but you will forget that you were hit by someone over the years. After all, on page 34, Elliot (I think, because it’s implied, not written) says, “You’re terrible [at playing the saxophone].”
Catalina “...looked sadly at the sax. She nodded.” This explains that words do hurt more than physical contact, because when Russell was punched by Richie, he was hurt, but his feelings weren’t so depressed, and he also just took one blow to the face, kind of like a shot, because it’s more of a one-time thing. In Catalina’s case, she is repeatedly unconsciously reminding herself about the notes, and how bad her feelings were hurt. It hurts more, because she is unconsciously reminding herself, making her want to go back to the Philippines, and also, most people know what it feels like to replay something funny over and over again in your head, right? You keep laughing, because you remind yourself about it. The same goes for here. She is replaying what happened over and over again, and she becomes more and more depressed every time, but she cannot do anything about it, because she cannot stop herself from unconsciously reminding herself what happened. I agree with Russell’s mother, because physical bullying is a shot, but verbal bullying is a repetition.

    ReplyDelete
  94. 1) I think that Chris helped Russ get Elliot out of the water because when he was just standing there and looking in horror as the accident happen, he probably would feel very guilty because of all of the the things that he did before. So maybe he wanted change himself/attitude and help for once, do the right thing. It also sounds as if he had realized that he had done the wrong thing. As on page 59, it says "He was leaning back against the current and he had Elliot by the shoulders, trying to pull him out of the water." which tells that he was scrambling to help. This is going to change Chris as a character because slowly piece by piece because he will understand and will eventually stop bullying people.

    ReplyDelete
  95. 2) I think that violence is not acceptable because when someone hurts you because they don't like you or you did nothing to them and they just feel like doing. However, if someone does verbal bullying on you it is going to damage more because that will stay with you forever in your heart while the violence will make a dent in your outer body.

    ReplyDelete
  96. 1) I think that Big Chris helped Russ and Elliot because he felt bad that he and the jock rots would always pick on Elliot for no apparent reason and he felt bad about doing this. He didn't want Elliot to just die in the river so he went out and saved him. Big Chris was a known kid while Russ and Elliot were not really the type of people who were recognized. Chris was trying to save Elliot’s life.

After Chris recovered Elliot, it says, ”Chris ran to the house next to the park and called for the ambulance (page 61)”.

In this quote, it shows that Big Chris felt bad about what he and his friends did to Elliot and voluntarily called for help, even though he had the opportunity to run off like the rest of the jock rots. I think after this, Big Chris will have a change of heart and stop bullying Elliot and put a stop to the teasing that is going around because he saw how bullying hurt people, physically and mentally.

    2) I think violence is sometimes acceptable, but only in certain occasions, like war. Elliot used a marble-filled sock to physically hit Burke on the head. Elliot was trying to get back at the jock rots for all the times they bullied him. In this case, I think violence is avoidable and resulting to get assistance from an adult is the right way to go, but then, when the jock rots should not have threatened Elliot on the bridge.

On page 60, while sitting in the hospital, Catalina says, “They could have killed him…he hit his head.”

Here, it proves the depth of impact violence can cause, all because of Elliot losing his patience and resorting to violence and physical actions. This is why I say that in most cases, violence is a bad choice.

    3) I think Russ’s mom was trying to state that Elliot was glad to have Russ and Catalina as friends. She says that Elliot was lucky to have a good family and good friends like them two. Elliot and them had gone through so much together, that they made a huge impact on his life.

In the hospital, Elliot’s mom said that, “I wish you could have seen his face when I told him you were here--both of you...Getting together with you two has made such a difference for him” (page 62).

Here, it states that Russ and Catalina meant a lot to Elliot. He thought of them as really good friends. This is an evidence that Elliot appreciated Russ and Catalina coming to hospital to make sure he was okay.

    4) She means that for girls, this stuff about beauty is a really sensitive thing, like physical bullying is to boys, although I disagree. Catalina is getting bullied by the beauty queen of the school, Bethany DeMere. Russ and his mom were conversing about Catalina’s bullying. His mom thought that Bethany’s glamour was being threatened by Catalina.

On page 67, Russ’s mom says, ‘ “If I were the reigning glamour queen of your grade, I would be worried.

I shook my head, trying to clear it. “So you think that is why Bethany’s trying to crush her?”

“That would be my strong suspicion,” my mom said.’

It clearly proves that his mom, being a girl, is telling her reasons for why she thinks that girl’s verbal bullying is more serious than physical bullying. I think that his mom is forgetting the fact that while you can get over verbal bullying, physical may disable you for life.

    ReplyDelete
  97. 3) What his mom is trying to say is that after all of these problems happened to Elliot, now he knows that he has someone (Russ and Catilina) to look over his back and work as a team. I agree with Russ's mom because what she is saying is true in the normal life because when something happens to you, your best friends or parents will help guide, look over you and help you through any problems that you are experiencing.

    ReplyDelete
  98. 4) I think that what Russ's mom is trying to say is that Girls have more of verbal bullying and boys have more on a physical bullying because for girls it is about the way you look or smell which relates to gossiping which also leads to a breakdown in the heart. However for boys, they have more power/strength and use it to their advantage over others. I agree with Russ's mom because as I said earlier verbal bullying is more harmful than physical bullying.

    ReplyDelete
  99. 1. I think that Chris decided to hep Russ get Elliot because he might have felt bad. He knew that Elliot could have had severe injuries or even had killed him. He felt that he had no regrets, but after, that all changed for him. He might have also felt that he needed to be an upstander for once instead of being like the other Jock Rots. They had all left him and he decided to make a change. Pg. 59 "Burke and Blanchette backed up and looked at me, wide-eyed. Then they turned and pounded off the bridge. They were gone."

    ReplyDelete
  100. 1. I think that Chris felt that since he made this mistake, he should help resolve it. I think that now Big Chris will not be one of the Jock Rots. “And there was Big Chris. Big Chris was big and acorn headed but not dumb at all, actually, just there and kind of loyal. At least, until this happened, he was there. After what happened that day, Big Chris never acted quite the Same. (P55)” This means that Big Chris felt really bad for his mistake. Because of this Chris “left the Jock Rots” so he didn’t have to do any more of this. Also I think that Chris was only with them because he probably didn’t want to be beaten up then he noticed because of this other kids get beat up and finally when Elliot fell of the bridge he quit. He quit because he didn’t want to get beaten up but, he also didn’t want to beat people up.

    2. I think that violence is only acceptable in some cases. Two situations where violence is acceptable are, to defend yourself and in a game or sport if needed, such as wrestling and/or football. “... Elliot swung the thing overhand and it came down and smacked Burke on the forehead. (P56)” I think that in this situation violence is not acceptable because he wasn’t trying to defend himself, he just wanted revenge. I don’t think violence should be used in revenge because revenge isn’t defense, it’s just getting back at someone while defense is trying to get someone to stop.

    3. I think that Russ’s Mom is trying to say this because Elliot has Russ, so he will recover faster and he will be lucky, if he had no one, he would be very sad and he would heal slower. Russ’s mom says, “He has his family. And his mom’s right—now he has you two. (P63)” Russ thinks that this has happened because of himself, but in my opinion this is not true. Elliot himself chose to do this, Russ didn’t tell him to do this even though he probably wanted to do this.

    4. I agree that verbal bullying is worse than physical but it can happen to both genders, not just girls or just boys. “Sticks and stones may break your bones but words are ghosts that haunt you,” http://www.abcornwall.org.uk/professionals/what-is-bullying/physical-verbal-emotional. “Girls at this age can be really vicious, and so vulnerable. I almost think it’s more serious business than you boys with your physical stuff. (P67-68)” I think this statement is true but boys can get verbally bullied too, just as bad as girls.

    ReplyDelete
  101. 2. Violence is sometimes acceptable. Self defense is considered violence so it can at certain circumstances. When Elliot hit one of the Burke, it was out of anger and rage, which was unnecessary. Then when they dropped Elliot off of the bridge, that was mainly out of revenge for hitting Burke. If the violence were for something like self defense or whatever, it wouldn't be as bad. Pg 58 "So, you want to fly, Bird Boy? Or would you like to apologize to the man?" That basically says that Elliot did something and they want him to say sorry or they will do something bad to him.

    ReplyDelete
  102. 3. One thing might be the fact that he is lucky to be alive. He also has good friends to be at his side to help and support him when he is in need. He probably would have died if no one had rescued him so he is lucky to have Russ with him(even thought it was mostly Chris). Also, his family is not demented, divorced, having troubles, disabled, or whatever, but some people do and he would be living a much worse life if that had happened to him.

    ReplyDelete
  103. 3) I agree with Russ’s mom when she said that Elliot was lucky to know Russ and Catalina and to have a family that cared for him. I think that what she meant was that Elliot has his family and friends to help and support him through bullying. Even though Elliot was experiencing a very rough time at school, it was better that Russ and Catalina befriended him so that he could lean on them. Russ and Catalina even helped Elliot build up the confidence to fight against the bullies (not that the way of fighting physically was the best option). On p. 63, Russ’s mom says, “‘I know. But he has people. He has his family. And his mom’s right-- now he has you two.’” This quote reveals that having thoughtful and loving people around Elliot creates a less stressful atmosphere. This also shows that Russ and Catalina have affected Elliot’s attitude-- his mother noticed that Elliot acted differently at home, maybe happier and more positive. I think that Russ and Catalina really help Elliot feel better, that there are actually people that wouldn’t ignore or hurt him.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I agree and disagree to Russ's mom on that part. When she says that verbal bullying can be more serious, she is right, and wrong. Verbal bullying can "internally" scar someone for life and if it is serious enough, he/she might even commit suicide. Even though, physical bullying can literally internally scar you for life. If someone hits you hard enough, you could have severe issues with that area. Not exactly to do with bullying, but in this show called River Monsters, Jeremy Wade gets hit by a fish in the chest. Even after a year or so, he still has a strange heartbeat. So if you get punched or whatever, it could be worse than it sounds. When she says that boys are more physical than girls, she is wrong. Boys can be verbal(not saying that every boy bullies) and girls can be physical(not saying that all girls are bullies). Even though you might not find a little girl in a giant wrestling match, she is still wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  105. 4) I agree with Russ’s mom when she said that verbal bullying is more painful than physical bullying. “‘Girls at this age can be really vicious, and so vulnerable. I almost think it’s more serious business than you boys with your physical stuff,’” she said (p. 67-68). This means that stereotypical girls feel competitive and use words to put others down, while the boys physically hurt others. The reason Russ’s mom thinks this might be because girls tend to have insecurities, so they make others feel lower than them with their words, while boys are straightforward and would just punch someone so that they feel stronger than the kid they just punched. I think that being physically bullied hurts less than being emotionally bullied because the pain of a punch cannot be repeated over and over to the extent of the moment, but the words of someone who didn’t even look like a “bully” to you, could make you feel terrible about yourself for a long time. Most likely, if someone physically injured you so much that you would have to go to the hospital, they would not do it again to the same extreme, so you wouldn’t have to experience that type of pain from that bully again. But when someone verbally bullies someone, they can’t always see the scars and bruises of their words, and continue knocking people down.

  106. 1A) Big Chris does not want to be in trouble like Richie, he realizes that he is doing a mistake and there will be consequences for his action, so he helps Elliot from drowning. He also realized that making Elliot drown and almost die is really harsh.
After helping him, He keeps saying "We didn't mean to do that, we're so sorry" (P. 126). This proves that Chris didn't mean to do harm to Elliot and was just blindly following orders from Blanchette, probably just to please him. He also may be afraid of Blanchette, but realizes it’s a mistake to hurt someone; probably the pain he caused to Elliot changed his mind on the bridge.

    ReplyDelete
  107. 2A) Violence is never acceptable; one would use violence only if someone tries to harm you. One should not attack and cause violence for no reason or to bully anybody.
Elliott was bullied by the Jock Rots on his way home. Blanchette, Burke and Big Chis attacked him in the street and started hitting him, causing him pain (P. 116). Elliott probably was angry with this attack. He threw a bag of Marbles at the three who attacked him, hurting Burke on the forehead. This made the three angry and further starts hitting Elliot. The big kids hauled Elliott onto the bridge and pushed him over the railing.
Though Elliot was defending himself, he instigated them by starting the violence. This made them angrier and caused further harm to Elliot by almost killing him. Violence does not bring any good even when one is self-defending.

  108. 3A) Yes I agree with Russ’s mom. Russ’s mom meant that Elliot is Lucky because he has not only his family to support him but, he also has his two friends. Russ’s mom is right in the sense that Elliot is lucky to have survived such a fall. But, he also has his friends by his side to support him anywhere he goes so is always protected by his friends.
It was funny to read Russ’s comment or thoughts without understanding what his mom meant when she says “He has his family… now he has you two”.

  109. 4 A) I agree with her because she is talking about other type of bullying in the School. Bullying can be in many forms, it can be very physical like in this Elliott’s Bridge example or it can be mean things girls say to each other. Words can be as harsh as being physical with others. Boys sometime physically bully each other, but on the other hands Girls in school can be very mean with words to others and with vulnerable girls.
Bullying is bad regardless of physical or words. It hurts kids both physically and emotionally. This can very hurtful. So, I agree with Russ’s mom.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Question 4: Russell's mom is trying to say that girls can be very competitive about popularity and bullying. "Girls can be very viscious at this age. I almost think its more serious than you boys and your physical stuff." What she means in this quote is that girls will do almost anything to become popular and to make other girls feel stupid. I agree with Russells mom because sometimes, getting mentally bullied can hurt a lot more. For example, mental bullying can result in more people commiting suicide than physical bullying. This is bad because everyone's life is precious and no one deserves to have it taken away from them.

    ReplyDelete
  111. 1) I think Chris helped Elliot and Russell during the bridge incident because he probably knew Elliot could get killed by the rough river. Chris would probably never forgive himself if Elliot got hurt or killed. Chris seem very nice and hangs out with the Jock Rots so he won't get teased or bullied. On page 61. “He was pretty upset. "We didn't mean to," he kept saying while we were waiting for the ambulance,"We didn't mean to." I think that this means that he felt very sorry for what he and his friends had done to injure Elliot. This means Big Chris helped Russ get Elliot out of the water because he felt bad for what his friends did.
    2) I think violence is acceptable and unacceptable at the same time because if someone tried to harm you then you must fight back and then violence is okay. If you want to get revenge on somebody and use violence to do so that that isn't not acceptable because violence can harm or if serious can get killed. Perhaps, it's technically it’s true that violent is not the best solution to a problem, but in many cases through many lives have experienced that some people are just so blind to see that violence is bad and good.
For example, growing up Elliot has a serious bully problem. Elliot is a small kid, and the Jock Rots sought to build themselves up by putting him down. They are extremely cruel, and wanted to hurt him on a personal level. These aren’t simple people you could talk to. Elliot never remembered to ask them why the Jock Rots were treating him that way and never asked him to leave him alone. Eliot fixed that problem by going straight up to the Jock Rots and hit them with a bag of marbles. Violence always comes with consequences. Elliot got dropped into a river with rocks and got badly hurt.
    3) I think that Russell’s mom means that Elliot is lucky because even though he is being bullied, he has Russ and Catalina to support and be there for him. On page 63 Russell’s mom said, “I know, but he has people. He has his family. And his mom’s right-now he has you two.” she means that Eliot may be going through a lot but his family and his friends are helping him to get through it all. When Elliot was dropped off the bridge, Russell and Big Chris helped him and pulled him out of the water to save his life if they didn't do that, Eliot would drown and would have died. Russell’s mom was trying to say Elliot could have been killed so he was lucky that he didn’t get hurt to bad.
    4) I think she means that the girl’s verbal bullying is just as serious as physical bullying, and sometimes even worse. Many people (especially girls) have taken their lives because of verbal bullying. I agree with Russell’s mom, I think she means that the girl’s can be VERY sensitive when it comes to words. Girls can be sad and depressed for weeks and lots of boys just shake it off right away! When it comes to bullying boys and girls are very different.

  112. 1. I think that big Chris helped Elliot because he felt bad for Elliot and he may have thought he would be in trouble so he decided to help Elliot but I don’t think so because Russ said “He was never the same after the accident.” So this is why I think that is why this is why the author did the foreshadowing.

I think that big Chris helped Elliot because he felt bad for Elliot and he may have thought he would be in trouble so he decided to help Elliot but I don’t think so because Russ said “He was never the same after the accident.” So this is why I think that is why this is why the author did the foreshadowing.

  114. 2. I think that violence is ok in certain circumstances like if someone is trying to harm you or they have harmed you in the past so he thought they would do it again so he protected himself just like the book said so this is the quot “one eliot took the divis and it hit the person in the forehead the person he crumbled to the ground.”

  115. Emma Q1) I think big Chris helped Elliott and Russ because he felt bad for bullying Elliott. Also he could of killed Elliott so he wanted to make sure he didn't die, because then he would probably feel guilty for the rest of his life. I think that big Chris will change into a nice character and become Catalina,Elliott's,and Russ' friend. On page 61 the quote " Chris didn't come.He was really upset." Shows that Chris feels very guilty and didn't mean to hurt anybody.

Emma Q2) I think violence is situational. This means you can only use violence under certain circumstances, because if someone try's to harm you ,you probably won't just sit there. You'll probably fight back and defend yourself. Such as when Elliott tried to defend himself but ended up Almost dead. On page 56 the quote "Elliott reached in his jacket pocket and pulled something out. He took a step back. The Something was dark and not very big, hanging from his hand. The 3 Rots were just standing there looking when Elliott swung that thing over-hand, and it came down and smacked Burke on the forehead. This shows that Elliott was trying to defend himself from his major bullies.

Emma Q3) I agree with Russ' mom because he's lucky to have a family who loves him, friends who care about him, and is lucky not to have died. On page 63 It says "He has family. And his mom's right-now he has you two." This proves my claim that he is lucky, because he has so much, a person is lucky if they even lived to be their age. Many people are lucky they just don't realize it because most of us are spoiled.

Emma Q4) She means that girls are just as vicious with words. If they feel threatened they will bully this other girl mostly in a group, either with words or cyber bullying. In the quote "if I were a reigning glamor queen of your grade, I'd be worried." I think that is absolutely true because that is exactly what is happening in our school.

  116. #1 Chris helped Elliot because he didn't want to get in trouble. I think Chris will change throughout the book because he now knows how Elliot feels when he is bullied and wants to help him stop it. Unlike the rest of the Jock Rots, Chris is actually starting to care for Elliot.
" We really didn't mean to. We really didn't mean to, he kept saying while we were waiting for the ambulance. We didn’t mean to.” (pg.61)
This quote shows that Chris really didn't want to get in trouble because he keeps regretting he ever bullying him. He regrets bullying Elliot and dropping him into the river.

  118. Q1: I think that Chris felt bad for how he treated Elliot. In the text it says that Chris is loyal so I think that when Elliot hit him he got a taste of his own medicine and changed his loyalty. In the quote "no" and Chris lunged forward I think that he realized that bullying Elliot was a mistake.
Q2: I think that violence should never be acceptable because all it does is make the person who was the target get revenge causing more violence. This happened in the book when Elliot retaliated back at the three boys because of all the mean things that they did to him violent or not, so Elliot wanted revenge. "The kids would pour water into his cloths and squeeze ketchup in his sandwich and walk away with his cookie," in this quote Russ talks about all the things that made Elliot retaliate
Q3: I think that Russ's mom is thinking that it is a great step forward for Elliot and Catalina to have friends. "You mentioned your dad Catalina did you want to come with him?" "No I wanted to stay with my mother in the Philippines." In this quote Russ's mom talks to Catalina about her life and when she finds out that she was lonely and then she got Russ and Elliot as friends. After they dropped Catalina off Russ's mom was happy.
Q4: I disagree that verbal bullying is worse than physical bullying. I disagree because with physical you get physically hurt and you can get down on yourself and feel emotionally hurt while verbal only makes you emotionally hurt. "My mom came home. She was calling. Hello but I was sitting on the computer with it off doing nothing," Said Russ. This quote shows that Russ is not just physically hurt but because he is staring out into the distance it means that he is also emotionally hurt. 2 in 1.

  119. Q1

In the Revealers book, Russ says that Big Chris was kind of loyal and there until he let go of Elliot on the bridge. And then he never acted the same.Russ states: "And there was Big Chris.Big Chris was big and acorn headed but not dumb at all ,actually, just kind of loyal and there. At least, until this happened, he was there. After what happened that day, Big Chris never acted quite the same." This means that when Big Chris felt realy bad abiut letting Elliot falling off the bridge. So when I think of this moment, later in the book, I think Big Chris will help Elliot and Russ and Catalina.

  120. Q2

I don’t think that violence is acceptable. You can always talk out problems. For example, Russ tried to ask why Richie was being a bully to him. In other circumstances, like Elliot’s, you just can’t talk people out of things so you have to use violence to make them stop. One reason I don’t accept violence, is that when someone uses violence on someone else, It will only lead to more violence. That is exactly what happened to Elliot. He smacked Burke Brown in the face with that sock full of marbles. Burke didn’t like it so he dropped him off the bridge. Also, too much violence can lead to serious injuries. Those are the reasons why I do not accept violence.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Russ mom is thinking that, although Elliot “accidentally” fell from the bridge, he was lucky to find Russ and Catalina. Since they were all being bullied in and outside of school, they can help each other in difficult times. She might also think that since Elliot fell from the bridge, the Jock Rots might be scared and actually stop bothering him. Also, since Elliot fell from the bridge, Big Chris realized that hurting people was not a good thing. I think I agree with Russ’s mom. Elliot might have fallen off that bridge but he had friends that helped him get him to the hospital and cared for him. If he hadn't met Russ and Catalina, he would have nobody to help him. He would have just laid there in the rocks until somebody found him.

  122. When Russe’s mom says “Girls at this age can be really vicious, and so vulnerable. I almost think it’s more serious business than you boys with your physical stuff.” she means that she thinks that verbal bullying is worse than physical bullying. I disagree with her because with verbal bullying, you can ignore the comment. If someone calls you a name, you can just walk away and. If you are experiencing physical bullying you can’t ignore someone because they are physical hurting you.

  124. Sahil: 1. I think that Chris helped Elliot because he really didn't drop Elliot on purpose. He never wanted to seriously hurt Elliot, which is he tried to help him after he fell. On pg 61 Chris says,” We didn’t mean to. We really didn’t mean to.” This shows that he actually felt bad for Elliot and that he might become their friends and give up bullying.

  125. 4.(the one you should grade). On page 67 and 68 Russ' mom said, " I almost think it is more serious business then you boys with your physical stuff". I agree with Russ's mom, because your wounds can heal but the words someone says will stay with you forever.

  126. Sahil: 2. I think that what Elliot did is okay in this situation because violence is situational. On pg 54, Elliot goes crazy saying, “ I’m sick of what people do okay? I’m sick of it! Someone has to pay! Someone!” This quote shows that Elliot is sick of all the bullying he has had over the years and wants revenge on the people who have bullied him. Because of this, I think it is okay for him to show violence, especially after years of torture.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Sahil: 3. Russ’s mom meant that Elliot is lucky that he now has friend that can help him and make him feel better. He has his whole family where Russ only has his mom. On pg 63 Russ’s mom says, “ He has people. He has his family. And his mom is right- now he has you two.” This shows that even though he is bullied, he now has friends to make him feel better.

  128. 1)The quote on page 55 is showing foreshadowing. The forshadowing is explaining how big Chris was before the incident. Big Chris probably helped Elliot because he felt sorry for him (I mean, he did fall off of a bridge! [pg. 59]) some evidence (also pg. 59), shows that big Chris was a bit worried."Chris grabbed my arm. 'Come on!' he yelled."-page 59. This quote show that big Chris was alarmed, and wanted to help Elliot immediately.I think the bridge incident will change Chris a character throughout the novel. This is because he will probably still have the feeling, of knowing, that he almost killed someone. I mean, that's pretty scary!

    ReplyDelete
  129. Sahil 4. Russ’s mom means that it’s better to be physically bullied than verbally bullied. I disagree with her because physical bullying can harm you a lot more than a few words can. On page 44 Russ gets hit by “A bone crushing fist that hit my face” that leaves him injured for a few weeks and he gets a black eye. That can hurt a lot more than someone calling you stupid or ugly.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Sahil: I respectfully disagree with Anna B. for her answer for 2. Anna says that it was not right for Elliot to hit the Jock Rots because they weren't doing anything to him at the time. I disagree with that because the jock rots had been bulling him for years. I think it's okay if he get's a little revenge for that.

  131. 4) In the book, The Revealers, students at "Darkland" Middle School are being both verbally and physically bullied. The main character's mother believes that verbal bullying is worse than physical bullying, which she expresses after Elliot's bridge incident. I agree because verbal bullying stays in your mind a long time, whereas with physical bullying, the marks will fade over time. The reader can see the effects of verbal bullying on Catalina, one of the characters in the book, after some popular girls leave a nastygram on her table “Her face shrank into a blank mask…” If you came here to give that to me”, she said without turning around, “Just leave it. Wherever you want.” (p. 35). This proves that Catalina feels embarrassed and bad about being verbally/emotionally bullied. Certainly, words have a strong impact on people's feelings, which shows how damaging this type of bullying can be.

    ReplyDelete
  132. The use of violence is situational. In Elliot's case he could use violence because the text says "When they spotted Elliot coming they sauntered out in the street. Casually they surrounded him." This proves that the Rots provoked Elliot first giving him the right to use violence

    ReplyDelete
  133. 2)I personally think that violence is situational. One real-life example is if maybe someone was trying to kidnap you. What would you do then, say,”sorry, but I don’t think it’s right that you’re kidnapping innocent people.” No. You would probably use violence in a situation like that right? I’m not saying that violence is great, but I’m not saying that it should be forbidden. My reasoning can relate to the whole chapter, “Bird Boy.” The whole, entire chapter explains the event of the Jock Rots bullying Elliot, and how Elliot uses violence to fight back(and then he falls off of a bridge.)Violence being situational means that you should only use violence, depending on the situation. In this situation, I personally think that Elliot shouldn’t have used violence. First, of all, because it lead to even more violence. Second of all, if he had just verbally reported the bullying, there would’ve been a very small chance that either of them would get hurt (Jock Rots & Elliot). This was the pattern of violence: Jock Rots->Elliot->Jock Rots. First the Jock Rots attacked, then Elliot attacked, then the Jock Rots again. In this situation, both sides used violence. And in this case, I think that violence was not needed. Elliot might’ve wanted to prove a point, but he shouldn’t have used violence.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Sahil: I agree with Samarth for Q 2 because Elliot wanted a little revenge. But when the Jock Rots struck back he had to defend himself. In this way it was right for Elliot to attack the Jock Rots and defend himself.

  135. Her Mom is saying that just because Elliot has people he can trust he will be okay. I disagree for the same reason Russ does "Mom, he gets dumped on by anybody who feels like it, anytime they feel like it." Elliot obviously came prepared to fight the Jock Rots because he had a weapon, but I do not think that he had to attack them and should have just walked away and left. But the Jock Rots did come towards Elliot and hit him first, so he did have the right to fight back.

  137. She means that getting bullied through thought transfer hurts more than a drop off a bridge because wounds aren't permanent (unless its like getting paralyzed). I agree because this can go through the whole school embarrassing the victim. You not only make them cry, but you make them hate themselves.

  138. 3. I agree with Russ's mom when she says that Elliot is lucky, even after being dropped off a bridge.

"Girls at this age can be really vicious, and so vulnerable. I almost think it's more serious business than you boys and your physical stuff."

I agree with Russ's mom because when you are bullied physically, most of the time you will recover fully, but when you are bullied verbally, those words can stay with you forever. Verbal bullying also hurts more than physical bullying because their words can change how you feel about yourself and others and their words also hurt your feelings.

  140. Russ’s mom’s, the main character’s mom, says that Elliot is a lucky person even though he just went to the emergency room because the Jock Rots, his main tormentors, dropped him off a bridge and into a shallow stream with big rocks at the bottom. Russ doesn't understand what she means because Hello? Didn’t they just come from a hospital? I think Russ’s mom means that if someone has a family and good friends, it means he/she is loved and cared for (usually). .”Elliot’s family seems nice,” Catalina said…”It’s a good family,” my mom said, “His dad travels a lot. But I think they are very close. He’s lucky.” (pg.63)

Even though he is badly injured, Elliot’s parents and friends are there to give attention and care to him. Because they are close, his family will try harder to make him comfortable and happy. With love and care, he will get better faster. Also, most injuries will go away at some point. If he had not been taken care of or taken to the hospital right away, he might have died.

    ReplyDelete
  141. 3)Russ’s mom is trying to tell him (Russ), that even though Elliot had to go to the hospital, he still had supporting friends. Would it have been better having Elliot in the hospital with no friends, or with friends? You might be in the most painful position, but having support from friends and family could turn your pain, into joy!!!!!! =D I agree with her. Russ might not understand her, but I do! Having support from people, even strangers can act like medicine. Knowing that people care about you an amazing feeling compared to the feeling of loneliness!!! Most regular people would probably agree with me. This is because knowing that you have support would be way nicer than being a loner. The fact that Russ and Catalina was there for Elliot was probably nice for Elliot. His friends came to support him!!!!! Yay!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  142. I think that violence is acceptable only when someone is threatening you, or harm you in any way and making you uncomfortable. In a perfect world, all incidents that include someone harming you would be done by calmly talking it out, but this is not a perfect world and usually, a person trying to hurt you will not sit down to chat, so you need to do whatever it takes to protect yourself, even if that involves kicking and punching to delay the person. I can relate this to the time when the Jock Rots came up to Elliot and tried to hurt him. He had the right to defend himself especially because they had been doing this for so long. As Russ recalls, “The Rots were on the basketball court at the park. When they spotted Elliot coming they sauntered out in the street. Casually they surrounded him. Blanchette slapped him hard on the shoulder; Elliot stumbled and Blanchette grinned. Then, from behind, Burke started unzipping his backpack. Elliot reached into his jacket pocket and pulled something out.” (pg.56) This shows that they approached him and wanted to hurt and tease him. This also proves that Elliot was trying to protect himself from being hurt.

  143. 1) In the chapter “Bird Boy,” Russ describes Big Chris as, “…just kind of loyal and there. Explain.

    ReplyDelete

  144. 1) Big Cris probily didn’t want to herat someone or was being fore to be a Jok Rot. Maybe he had a change of heart or was bullied when he was younger and didn’t want anyone else to go through it. He also probily thought that the jok Rots had done this for years any were horrible people to be with, so he left. He might of also felt guilty. “We didn’t mean to, we didn’t mean to.” Pg: 61

    ReplyDelete
  145. 2) In Eliot'so case, yes violence is acceptable because he was being bullied for years. For being bullied for years, throughn of a bridge, hitting some guy with a sock full of marbles, is very acceptable. If your bullied, attacked, or approached, you have full rights to fight back, or yell for help. If you fight or attack someone for no reason, then no, not acceptable.

    ReplyDelete
  146. 1) I think Big Chris helped Elliot and Russ after the bridge incident because he must have felt sorry for Elliot and Russ after he threw him of the bridge. I think Big Chris would have thought that he would also feel the same way as them if he was thrown off the bridge. "Chris jumped ahead, from rock to rock and hopped down into the water”(page 58). This shows that Big Chris must have felt really sorry for them and he probably saved Elliot and Russ by walking on rock to rock and jumping to the water could be a little dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  147. 2) In my opinion, I think that violence is never acceptable because when violence starts, it can cause more violence which is not good. Also, it hurts other people. Elliot made a bad choice which is to fight back at Blanchette and the Jock Rots. I think Elliot should have done something else like talking to their moms or the principal even though she does not reply well when she picks up phone calls. “He took a step back. The something was dark and not very big, hanging from his hand. The three Rots were just standing there looking when Elliot swung this thing overhand, and it came down and smacked Burke on the forehead”(page 56). This shows that the Jock Rots are mean since they threw Elliot off the bridge since Elliot showed violence to them.

    ReplyDelete
  148. 3) I agree with Elliot’s mom because even though Elliot was dropped off a bridge, he still has his family. “I know. But he has people. He has his family. And his mom's right - now he has you two”(page 63). I think his mom means that everyone will be there to help him.

    ReplyDelete
  149. 4) I agree with her. If you punch someone which is physical bullying, the injury can heal in a few weeks. If you say bad words to a person which is verbal bullying, it will stay for a long time because it hurt your feelings. “Then I went to all the girls and said we were playing a joke, and not to come to the party. So on the day of the party, I know the girl was really excited and she had rented movies and she had all this food and stuff because she told me she was going to. And absolutely nobody showed up.”(page 134). This example proves that girls can be cruel as Russ’s mom said. I agree with her because in the quote, the person moved to another school for having a party.

    ReplyDelete
  150. 3) Russes mom explains that he’s lucky to have friends, a caring family and good education, not that he’s lucky to be thrown off a bridge head first. Russes mom said it in the wrong way, but her reason is still clear. He’s got people that care for him, and will stand by him. I agree in with Russes mom in a way. He could have been killed from that drop. “He has his family. And his mom’s right—now he has you two.”

    ReplyDelete
  151. 4) Russes mom means broken bones heal, but words can hurt forever. You can be haunted by someone's words for years, just because of bulleing. A bone heals and you get over it. I agree with Russes mom, but some people aren’t affected by peoples words, and some really are. Like the note, Catalina got really upset because of the not, but Russ got over the punch in minutes. Then again, being thrown off a bridge is worse than being called names in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  152. 4)Russ’s mom is trying to explain that Catalina’s bullying experience is worse than Elliot’s and Russ’s bullying experience. Catalina’s bullies are using more of a verbal-like, emotional bullying(social bullying). Elliot’s and Russ’s bullies are using violence(physical bullying). I agree with Russ’s mom. I think that social bullying can be worse than physical. This is because, physical bullying is easier to find out about, and solve. Social bullying is harder to spot, and is not easier to solve. In this case, Catalina’s bullies are social bullying because a., they were spreading rumors, b., making her seem lower on the social scale, etc. Social bullying can even cause suicide.Physical damage can often be fixed, while the effect on someone’s emotions from social bullying can not heal as quickly. Sometimes never. Social bullying can even turn into physical, verbal, or even cyber bullying! One’s emotions can lead into anger, and cause them to have revenge(victim[Elliot]), or hurt the person even more(bully[Jock Rots]). Maybe the bully wants to hurt the victim by using insults verbally. Or perhaps they want to go online and bully the victim. There are so many ways to bully someone, and the first “step” to start it all can be through emotions-> social bullying.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Q1. I think that when Chris helped Elliot after Chris and his friends threw Elliot off the bridge was because Chris felt worried that Elliot might be hurt. I think he realized they had gone too far and that they might get into real trouble. “Under the bridge Chris was in swirling water up to his waist. He was leaning back against the current and he had Elliot by the shoulders, trying to pull him out of the water.” [p. 52] This illustrated how Chris realized he really messed up and was trying to make sure Elliot was okay. I think that Chris will become a character that will think about the consequences to his actions.

Q2. I think that violence is not the answer like how Elliot reacted to the Jock Rots. “Elliot reached in his jacket and pulled something out. Elliot started to swing the thing at Blanchette.” [pg 49] Even though the Jock Rots were bullying Elliot, he started the violence. Elliot got thrown off the bridge as a reaction to what he did. Violence is not the answer it just makes things worse when people get angrier and angrier and keep reacting to it.

Q3. I think that Russ’s mom is right because if you have true friends they will stand up for you no matter what. An example of this is when Russ was screaming “Elliot” and went to help him. When Russ said that he “slid down into the water I guess it was cold; I didn’t notice” [Pg 52] this shows that Elliot is lucky because he has friends that will come and help him.

Q4. Russ’s mom was saying that girls bullying is worse than boy bullying. I do not agree with her because I think they are both hurtful. When Elliot got thrown off the bridge “Elliot got crumpled up by the rocks “[Pg 52] and they were saying mean things to him. So, that means that they are just as bad. Words can sometimes hurt as much as physical bullying.

    ReplyDelete
  154. 1) I think that Big Chris helped Elliott and Russ because he felt guilty, and he finally understood that being with the Jock Rots was wrong. On page 61, Big Chris says,”We didn’t mean to. We didn’t mean to.” This proves that Big Chris really does care, and he really feels sorry about what he did. I think Big Chris will continue to understand just how bad bullying is throughout and he will maybe try to make it up to Elliott, Russ, and Catalina. He will probably cease to be a bully and turn into a nice person.

    2) For the most part, violence is not okay. If it’s a life or death situation, and you’d rather not die, then yeah, you can use violence. But if you and your incredibly annoying miniature gorillas that live in the same house as you (wild sisters, an incredibly dangerous species) are fighting and they punch you or something, it’s not okay to fight back and get revenge on them, even in self-defense, because most likely, they will not try to kill you. I think what Elliott did to the Jock Rots was wrong, and what they did to him was also wrong. On page 58, Elliott says,”You suck Brown, you all suck,” and he smacks Burke in the forehead with his sock. He had come prepared, which means he was asking for a fight, which isn’t really okay. I think Elliott was just angry, and that anger made him go out of control. Neither side did the right thing.

    3) I think that Russ's mom means that Elliott is lucky to have such caring family members and friends. He used to have only his family, but after he met Russ and Catalina, he had them as well. On page 63, Russ's mom says,"It's a good family. His dad travels a lot. But I think they're very close. He's lucky." Russ's mom probably means that Elliott is lucky to have a dad that's so close to him. Also, Russ doesn't have a dad, and his mom might think that Elliott is lucky because he does have a dad.

    4) I think Russ's mom is hinting that verbal bullying is worse than physical bullying because girls tend to do verbal bullying and boys tend to do physical bullying. On page 67, Russ asks,“You think . . . you think Bethany DeMere is threatened by Catalina?” I think this shows that verbal bullying isn’t as obvious as physical bullying, which makes it harder to stop and the victims of verbal bullying may suffer more than those of physical bullying. I agree with Russ’s mom because if you’re being verbally bullied, you are hurt emotionally, and that kind of pain is hard to get rid of, whereas if you’re physically bullied, the pain comes in the form of bruises and external injuries, which can heal. Also, in extreme cases, somebody might get physically bullied, and the bully could kill them. If you’re being verbally bullied to such an extent that you commit suicide, that’s probably more depressing because committing suicide means you don’t want to live, and getting murdered means that you still could have had the will to live.

  155. 1. I think the bridge incident will change Big Chris as the plot unfolds because he will begin to realize that being a bully can hurt people. He is sorry about what happened and he might now join sides with Russ, Elliott and Catalina.
“Chris didn’t come. He was pretty upset. “ We didn’t mean to,” he kept saying while we were waiting for the ambulance. “ We didn’t mean to.” (Page 61).
This quote shows that Big Chris is probably upset about what he did and that he might stop tormenting Elliott after he has seen what has happened as a result of his bullying. He might now join Russ and his fight against bullying.

    ReplyDelete
  156. 2. I believe violence is situational, because sometimes you might be using it for self defense, but most of the time, violence is never acceptable. Violence is what landed Elliot in the hospital. It’s the thing terrorists use to intimidate for no apparent reason. The only time violence is actually acceptable is when you are attacked by a gang or something.
“ I had to stop this from getting worse. I had to. No more stupid experiments. No more pretending we were scientists or something; it was like painting a bull’s-eye on our faces, for some reason. Everyone was hurt and hurt bad. I looked at Catalina. Her expression was complicated. That’s it, I thought. Enough is enough. (Page 64)
This quote shows that everyone is hurt from these bullies and that nothing good is happening so far. This also shows that the Bullies are like the bucket dippers (that we learned about last year). They are taking Russ’s and Elliott’s life and taking away everything good about it, but nothing good is coming to them.

    ReplyDelete
  157. 3. I agree with Russ’s mom because even after all the misfortunate things that have happened to Elliott, he has a caring family and two great friends. If he had no family or friends, he would have been in a really bad position, but he still has something to look forward to, even if he is laying in bed he has good thoughts of times with his friends and family. Russ probably thinks it must suck to lay in a bed all day thinking of things he would rather do, but if Russ and Catalina hadn’t been there for him he would have been all shriveled up with nothing to look forward to when he got better.
“I wish you could have seen his face when I told him you were here-both of you,” she said. “ Getting together with you two has made such a big difference for him.” (Page 63)
This shows that Elliott has made 2 new good friends that he has good memories with and he knows they will always be on his side. If he had no friend and was all alone, he would probably feel even worse because kids will realize that he is an easy target and everyone will pick on him. Also, Russ had helped save his life and that probably means that Elliot will probably trust him.

  158. 4. Russ’s mom is talking about how girls claw at each other because of jealousy. Sports may be hard, but you are never going to kill someone’s self-belief. They can probably make girls feel like they don’t belong. Like they are all alone in this huge world.
“I’m not saying any of this is easy. But the girl … she is in a new country She doesn’t have her mom here. Try to imagine how it must feel to have people in her new school suddenly turn on her.” (Page 70)
This shows why Catalina can be so plain, because she has no mother with her now she must feel alone and abandoned to find everybody at school picks on her now. For me it would be really tough if my parents said pack up, we are moving to Iowa. I wouldn’t feel happy. For the first few months, I probably will feel like Catalina. It isn’t easy to move all of a sudden to place where you don’t know anybody.

  159. 1) I think that Big Chris felt bad for dropping Elliot of the bridge. He didn't mean to do this and he wanted to make up for his mistake. He wasn't loyal to his friends the Jock Rots anymore. The other two people from the Jock Rots ran away and Big Chris must think that they are jerks because Russ said that He never acted the same way again and he was worried about Elliot. Big Chirs was worried about Elliot. He wasn't that mean anymore because he cared.
"Chris didn't come. He was pretty upset. "We didn't mean to," he kept saying while we were waiting of the ambulance "We didn't mean to." (p.61)

This quote shows that Big Chirs was worried. It also shows that he didn't want to drop him of the bridge. Big Chris must have realized that the other two people of the Jot Rots were really mean and cold hearted. That is why he didn't run away and stayed to go get Elliot from the river. This experience changed the way he felt about his friends and Elliot. I think that Big Chris was sad and worried and I think next time he might defend Elliot or abandon that Jock Rots.

    2) I think that violence is situational. That means that you can only use violence under certain circumstances. For example I think that using violence would be ok if someone is trying to harm you. For example Elloit is bullied by a group called the Jock Rots and I think he has the right to defend himself.

"Elliot tried to take off but Blanchette grabbed him. Big Chris grabbed him, too. They held him, their big kids' hands clamped on each little arm, as the Burke slowly got up and stooped over to the dark object on the ground." "Burke flung the thing at Elliot's face. He was screaming all the curse words you could say--then Elliot started screeching right back at him, swearing at him, too." (p.57)

This quote shows that Elliot was helpless, and the bullies were hurting him really badly with violence. He had the right to defend himself. At the start of this chapter Elliot had this sock filled with marbles. When the bullies came and attacked him, he tried to defend himself with that sock, but then one I'the bullies tore it away from him. So he had no more defense. Elliot had the right to use violence to defend himself against the bullies.

I only had the quotes for these two questions. I needed the book, but you didn't give it to us and you told us to wait

    A1:
Russ, the main character in the Revealers, describes Big Chris loyal but after that day Russ thinks Chris never acted the same. I think Big Chris helped Elliot and Russ during the bridge incident because maybe Chris felt bad for Eliot and Russ that his friends pick on them a lot and that he accidentally pushed Elliot into the river. “I ran onto the bridge and stopped. They had him over the edge. I didn’t know what to do. “Don’t,” I said. “Don’t!” Burke was leaning over the railing, yelling in Elliot’s face. “Time to say you’re sorry, Geekowitz!” ( on pg.58) Because of that he doesn’t really like to hangout with the Jock Rots , but he just does because it makes him feel like he can’t be bullied because he and his friends are the one that bully. I also think maybe Chris could have felt what Elliot and Russ go through because maybe he went through bullying in the past as well. “ Under the bridge Chris was in swirling water up to his waist. He was leaning back against the current and he had Elliot by the shoulders, trying to pull him out of the water.” ( on pg. 59). Chris went through all that trouble to help out Elliot. What I observed was that Chris never really bullied people , he would be the one watching his friend’s, the Jock Rots, bully kids. Maybe Chris thought it was time to stand up to the Jock Rots and help Elliot out. Chris was probably tired of watching kids getting bullied by his friends. I believe that the bridge event will change Big Chris as a character in the novel because he helped Elliot and Rus. In my opinion, the Jock Rots will tell everyone that Big Chris is not part of their group anymore and everyone will be looking at him differently because of what he did.

A2: I believe that violence is acceptable in certain situations where a person is using a force to defend and protect himself/herself. If a person is being violent intentionally, then it is okay to use violence back. For example the Jock Rots were intentionally hurting Elliot. However, Elliot defended himself by using a sock full of marbles that he got from his jacket’s pocket. I believe this is an acceptable use of violence against a person who attacked first.

A3: I think that Russ’s mom is trying to be supportive and positive to Elliot because he is in pain. Whenever someone is in pain it is good to support them and remind them of what good things they have to look forward to. In addition I agree with what she said about having friends and family because without his friends there, he would have had no help to get him out of the water. And after the incident he wouldn’t have someone to drive him to the hospital if he had no parents and family.

A4: I agree with Russ’s mom because girl’s can cause more damage psychologically than physically. Boys bullying each other by using violence to hurt each other, however girls use gossiping, the internet , and calling each other names. This kind of bullying causes scars for life and brings down their self esteem. When boys hurt each other physically, the bruises or cuts go away and only hurt for a little while .

I think big chris wanted to do the right thing. "chris grabbed my arm come on he said," (pg.59) This quote shows that big chris was in a hurry to help and he just wanted to redeem himself by helping elliot

  170. I think violence is only ok in certain situations of self defense " the rots were on the basket ball court at the park. when they spotted elliot coming they sauntered out in the street." (pg.56) This quote shows that the rots came to elliot first and elliot thought they were going to attack him so he fought back.

  173. 1. I think that Big Chris help Elliot and Russ, because he felt bad for what he did. Russ did even say, before this event happened, that Chris was loyal. I think that because of the way that Chris behaved in front of Burke Brown and Jon Blanchette, they will kick him out of the Group they are in called, The Jock Rots.

2 I think that it really depends if you are asking for a fight or if you are trying to defend yourself. In “The Revealers,” Elliot was asking for a fight, and I do not think that was acceptable. However, if it is a life or death situation, that is a different story.

    3. I believe that Russ’s mom is trying to tell Russ that even though Elliot fell off of the bridge, he is lucky to have a great family and such wonderful friends that care so much about him. No matter what. I do agree with her, because Elliot does have many people that care about him no matter what happens in their path, and they are always there for Elliot.

    4. I think Russ’s mom is trying to say that even though boys fight a lot, girls fighting verbally is worse. I agree with her, because when boys fight, they are usually just messing around, but if it does get bad, the pain will eventually go away, but words will hurt forever. I also think that even though you can die from fighting, sometimes if words get too strong, you might kill yourself. In my opinion, it is much more sad if you kill yourself.

  177. Question #2
I would think that violence is only acceptable only when you are protect someone or someone else for the better cause.
"Casually they surrounded him. Blanchete slapped him hard on the shoulder; Elliot stumbled and Blanchete grinned. Then, from behind Burke started unzipping his backpack. Elliot reached into his jacket pocket and took something out. He took a step back. The something was dark no very big hanging from his hand. The three rots were just standing there looking when Elliot swung this thing overhand and it came down and smacked Burke on the forehead." (Pg 56)
Here when Elliot was being surrounded by The rots he took out the thing which was a sock and hit them because he was adamant he knew he was going to be Tara way and bullet and being hurt him.

  178. Question #1
In the text it sort of like Chris was never the same after one point and this could be because of many reasons, but mainly I can foreshadow that it is, because of the reason he was bullied at one point and he didn't want the same thing that happened to Elliot.
"Chris grabbed my arm. "Come on!" He yelled. We ran the other way, the bridge shaking beneath us. We scrambled down the steep river bank, and started hopping across the rocks." (Pg 59.)
Here you can see that Chris was eager and really scared in away, and wanted to have help Elliot when he was falling down onto the rocks and because of you can tell that Chris knows what is going to happen and what it's going to feel like and he didn't want the same things to happen.Because of what just happened you could see or foreshadow that Chris could be farther involved in the project if trying to stop what's going on.

  179. Question #3
I do agree with Russes mom, that he is lucky that he has a family and now that he has Russ and Catalina but she is making a point that things even worse could've happened. In the past maybe things happened that were worse so he is lucky.
"You know there's always one kid in school was the dirty one, one kid who's the smelly one, one kid who throws the ball over the blacktop... And one kid who is okay for anybody, absolutely anybody, to trash? In our school, the last kid was Elliot." (Pg 17)
From this you can tell that something or some things like this have happened many times before and maybe a lot worse so Russes mom could be right that he is lucky, that it hasn't happened the same way as other times. And again well he is also lucky because if things like this happen he will have Catalina and Russ to fall back on and let them help in these cases.I do agree with Russes mom, that he is lucky that he has a family and now that he has Russ and Catalina but she is making a point that things even worse could've happened. 180. Question #4
I disagree with Russes mom and the way she reacts as business with verbal is more dangerous than physical, because I would say physical is more painful than someone is saying that you're stupid because at this point you should know that verbal things won't hurt you like physical things. "Finally I got up. I peered at myself in the bathroom mirror. There was a multicolored area around my left cheek bone, below my eye mostly shades of purple, gray, and blue, with some red crinkles. I wet a washcloth very carefully wipe off the rest of the blood. Then everything went whitish and hazy again. I stumbled into my room and fell on the bed."(Pg 44-45)
As you can see those are the affects of the physical bullying that Elliot had but if you really think about it if it's a verbal is doesn't really hurt as much as there being a big bruise under his eye on his left cheek bone.

    ReplyDelete
  181. 1. I think that Chris, one of Elliot’s tormentors, helped Elliot and Russ in the bridge incident because he never intended to hurt Elliot or Russ. I think that Big Chris was trying to mean or bad. I don’t think that Chris wants to be the bad guy, I think he wants to be the good guy who helps other people when bullied. In the book it states, “Big Chris was big and acorn headed but not dumb at all, actually, just kind of loyal and there.”. The foreshadowing and the bridge event are going to change Big Chris because, after the bridge scene, Chris felt like he needed to help them. “Chris grabbed my arm. ‘Come on!’ he yelled.” (p. 59). And also, “Under the bridge Chris was in swirling water up to his waist. He was leaning back against the current and he had Elliot by the shoulders, trying to pull him out of the water.” (p. 59).

    2. I think that violence is acceptable when it comes to defending yourself. Like, "Then, from behind, Burke started unzipping Elliot's backpack." (p. 56). This means that the Jock Rots were bullying Elliot, and that needs to be punished. So Elliot "swung this thing overhand, and it came down and smacked Burke on the forehead." (p. 56). This means that Elliot took defended himself from the Jock Rots. If you smack someone with no reason, then that is not acceptable. But, when it comes to Elliot getting bullied, then, yeah, violence is okay.

    3. I think that Elliot is lucky because, “‘It’s a good family,’ my mom said. ‘His dad travels a lot. But I think they’re very close. He’s lucky.’ (p. 63). Some kids’ family are very apart. Like, a divorce. Russ’s mom thinks that Elliot is lucky, and I think so, too. Russ doesn’t think that Elliot is lucky because, “Didn’t they understand what a disaster this was? Hadn’t we just come from the hospital? Hello?” (p. 63). The quote means Russ thinks that Elliot isn’t lucky because he is bullied.

    4. In the book, The Revealers, students at "Darkland" Middle School are being both verbally and physically bullied. The main character's mother believes that verbal bullying is worse than physical bullying, which she expresses after Elliot's bridge incident. I agree because verbal bullying stays in your mind a long time, whereas with physical bullying, the marks will fade over time. The reader can see the effects of verbal bullying on Catalina, one of the characters in the book, after some popular girls leave a nastygram "’You want to know about her?’ she said. Her face was very red. ‘You want to know what kind of...stuff she comes up with? Here.’ She shoved the paper in my hand. ‘You can have this one, too.’" (p. 52). This proves that Catalina feels embarrassed and mad about being verbally/emotionally bullied. Certainly, words have a strong impact on people's feelings, which shows how damaging this type of bullying can be.

  183. 3) I think what Russ' mom means that he is lucky to be alive and have some people to lay back on, like that care about him. Elliot had no friends and not many people that care about him. He also might be hopeful that next time Russ and Catalina will defend him. I agree with Russ' mom, Elliot has some friends. He will be more hopeful and would want to stay alive.

“ ‘Thank you Russell,’ she said. ‘You probably saved his life.’”

This quote explains that if Russell wasn’t there Elliot could have died. This means that Elliot has someone that cares about him when his family isn’t there. He has hope, and friends. This also drives him to live, his life means something to someone other than his parents, and they are something to him too.

    4) I agree with Russ’s mom. She thinks that the bullying that girls do to girls is more serious than the boys’ bullying with all the violence. I think it is more serious because it is ruining the girls self-confidence when they not ready or old. Also the girls could lose temper so easily.

This quote happened after Catalina read the letter and Bethany DeMere walked by: “ ‘You want to know about her?’ she said. Her face was very red. ‘You want to know what kinds of . . . stuff she comes up with? Here.’ She shoves the paper in my hand. ‘You can can have this one, too.’ She slammed her locker and started to go.”(p.52) Catalina says the things that are in the one line quotes (‘).

Before this part, Catalina was calm. Then this part came (the part explained in the quote above). This quote explains that Catalina lost control and yelled at Russ and Elliot even if they were not the ones that offended her. That means she lost her temper. This might be more serious and might ruin Catalina’s future. So this proves that Russ’s mom is right and what she is trying to say

“Under the bridge Chris was in swirling water up to his waist. He was leaning back against the current and had Elliot by the shoulders, trying to pull him out of the water”, Russ says.
In this quote, it shows that Chris did not flee from the scene like the other Jock Rots, instead he stayed behind to help Elliot. Maybe he wanted to be a hero, or he really wanted to help Elliot.

  186. 2. I think violence is acceptable under certain circumstances. If someone is trying to hurt you it isn’t acceptable, but when you’re trying to defend yourself, it is.
On page 44, Russ says, “ A bone bashing fist hit my face.” In this case, Richie hit Russ just because he wanted to. But on page 58, Elliot tries to defend himself, “His feet were flailing around……”, he was trying to defend himself from the Jock Rots, so in that case violence is acceptable.
