Revealers Blog Questions for the Week of 11/6-11/13

PREDICTING:
1)    In the chapter “Bird Boy,” Russ describes Big Chris as, “…just kind of loyal and there. At least, until this happened, he was there. After what happened that day, Big Chris never acted quite the same” (p. 55). Why do you think Chris helped Elliot and Russ during the bridge incident, and how do you think the foreshadowing and the bridge event are going to continue to change Big Chris as a character in the novel? Explain.

2)    THINKING BEYOND THE TEXT:
In class, you already discussed whether or not you thought violence is ever acceptable. Now, write your own individual answer to that question, relating it to Elliot’s violence towards the Jock Rots, and the bridge incident. Please be detailed and thoughtful in your explanation.

3)    INFERENCE/READING BETWEEN THE LINES:
In the middle of page 63, Russ’s mom suggests that Elliot is lucky—even after leaving the hospital after he “accidentally” has been dropped off of a bridge by the Jock Rots. Russ’s mom says, “He has his family. And his mom’s right—now he has you two.” Russ doesn’t understand her, and thinks to himself, “Didn’t they understand what a disaster this was? Hadn’t we just come from a hospital? Hello?” Explain what Russ’s mom is thinking here. Do you agree or disagree with her. Please be thoughtful and detailed in your answer.

4)    THINKING BEYOND THE TEXT:
On pp. 67-68 in the novel, Russ’s mom reacts to Elliot’s bridge incident, and Catalina’s bullying, by saying: “Girls at this age can be really vicious, and so vulnerable. I almost think it’s more serious business than you boys with your physical stuff.” Explain what she means. Do you agree or disagree with her? Explain.

Revealers Blog Questions, Week 1

1. During their interaction outside Convenience Farms, Richie is clearly mean to Russ. Why do you think Russ wants to be like Richie, given that the interaction was such a negative one? Make a claim, based on inference, and using evidence from the text. Paraphrase text from the book to support your claim/opinion.
2. How does Russ stereotype Richie Tucker? Make a claim, and provide a quote from the story to support your claim/opinion.
3. What is Russ's attitude towards Elliot so far (what does he think of Elliot). Make a claim; use a quote from the story to support your claim/opinion.
4. On p. 37 Russ talks about platypuses and evolving. Why does he talk about this, and how do you think it relates to the bullying he, Catalina, and Elliot are experiencing. Explain.
5. On p. 44 Richie carries Russ off the street after he punches him. Using the 6 levels of moral development we discussed in class, explain what level you think Richie is on when he carries Russ to safety after bullying him. Make a claim, and use evidence to support your answer.
